as we know, a lot of people are struggling at the moment; interesting article from the Australian (last Friday): "Professionals and baristas have dominated jobs in the private sector, while teachers and healthcare workers have inflated public sector payrolls over the past year"

I guess the only downside is many of the barista jobs are probably part-time rather than full-time?

Yes and with it the 'Gig' economy is eroding worker's rights and security.  Fine if the remuneration is adequate but Uber is proof that this is not the case.

interesting that in many countries in Europe, being a barista is seen as a real, long-term job, whereas in the US and here, it's still seen more as a transition or student job, until you find a 'real' career... wonder if that will every change?

unlikely this will change any time soon when most baristas I know don't get sickness or holiday pay let alone penalty rates or superannuation...
