Hi all,

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is definitely a world's famous specialty coffee. However, should we consider it a benchmark for other's specialty mountain coffees?

Hi there.

let me answer your question with some other questions....is Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee a "specialty coffee"? What is specialty coffee? What do you mean by "benchmark"?

JBM is world famous. Why? (look it up). Does being famous make it specialty? Does being expensive make it specialty? In the scheme of things, what does it matter whether it is or not, if it is a nice coffee regardless of the answer?

In terms of benchmarking. There are lots of great coffees, enough of them can be scored into "Cup of Excellence" territory. There are also lots of great coffees that are not "cup of excellence". Does it matter, if they are nevertheless...individually great coffees. Each has something that appeals, for various reasons, to lots of individuals, who each have difference tastes, likes and dislikes.

I dont think you can benchmark things that arent comparable in the first place. You may benchmark one JBM to another JBM, but how could you benchmark a JBM, to any other coffee from some other location in some other country?

I dont think you can but that's just my opinion, and others may disagree.

I don't believe we should, I've tried JBM on a couple of occasions, it's left me totally underwhelmed, I'm sure what I tried was far from the best they produce, however having said that what I sampled was quite expensive and certainly not worth the price paid.

Fresh Coffee summed it up nicely, he is in a much better position than I am to offer an educated opinion.

I'm sure there are excellent JBM's, I'm yet to try one, and at the price being asked probably never will. :)

Yes... I'm happy to hear from members in relation to VC's conflict of interest.  It all depends I suppose on 'good faith' and the communities perception of such.  I've already had a request to remove all references to the blog but will refer to my colleagues for the final judgment.

Ive had an excellent JBM that I bought as green beans and others that were rubbish.  My wife was convinced that it was her favorite so it became a regular gift until I couldn't in good conscience pay the ransom wondering what I would recieve this time.  Being a bit cunning I bought instead a wonderful Kenyan for one quarter the price and it hit the spot. Of course I came clean and now my wife askes for characteristics as opposed to.... Brand names....
