Ok managed to source the hardcopy of this to see their methodology, and bottom line: there is no methodology. Their 'Best of' [there are actually six] for Adelaide are:
  • Lucia's
  • Cibo Espresso
  • Felici
  • Espresso Bar
  • Simply Coffee
  • Stax

Just a quick personal critique for those who are interested; have been in Adelaide about 8 months now and while I find Lucia's has a lovely atmosphere, its espresso is nothing special; I find it odd that they simply list Cibo Espresso [presumably as no.2] as there are about 14 of them scattered around Adelaide and there is a huge difference in quality. For the record, my last espresso at Simply Coffee was undrinkable - I just couldn't finish it.

Has anyone told the owner (Simply Coffee) that they have a problem.

Most customers vote with their feet it's up to the intrepid owner to identify issues as they arise and to correct them on the fly -  that's how you stay on top of your game...

True, though some "intrepid" owners are a little slow on the uptake, constructive customer feedback is a very useful tool, provided that the owner is receptive. ;)

Hi Db - I think Pat's got a point, but to be honest, the other thing is that they're a roastery so you'd think as a matter of course they'd also have some expertise at the coffee-making side of things... therefore it's a pretty difficult one to raise...

Ahh but a good coffee roaster doesn't make a good barista (necessarily) as they are completely different skills. I have heard from a roaster (not one I care to mention) that "anyone can make a good coffee it is all down to the roast". Not that I am suggesting that this is the case here but sometimes when you are trying to do several things you drop the ball on one.

OK we've closed off on our Spring issue, and the sad news is we've decided not to do the Best cafes of Adelaide at this stage.

We've spent several months doing some pretty thorough research on all the places mentioned here [and a lot more besides]. There are some very good places and in fact we believe there are two or three which would fit the high standards that we need to do a Top5 on par with Sydney & Melbourne, but we just couldn't find enough exceptional places to do a Top5 to the standard we require.

Things are definitely improving in Adelaide however, and we're hopeful we can do Top 5 for Adelaide this time next year.

I find myself captivated reading forum. Never thought I'd enjoy it so much.
Am a passionate coffee lover like all of you. Most of my drinking experience has been in sydney, drunk coffee at top 5. First time in Adelaide a month ago, and excited to try places that have been recommended.
Funny though, reading through Adelaide experiences found people saying things about rio when Tony has been roasting for them.
What's the story their?

We all know that coffee shouldn't be too hot, but judging from our [reviewing] experience over the past few months, that's the least of their worries.

The big one is just the lack of quality, overall!

Mario's Restaurant.

At the Glynde, opposite the Glynde hotel.
It's been there forever.
Went there last night as a family group.
Good food (Italian of course)
Excellent service.
Reasonable prices.
Kid friendly.
Most important of course the coffee, I ordered a double ristretto at the end of the evening and found it very much to my taste, a friend from Melbourne ordered the same and found it a little bitter though quite acceptable (keep in mind this is an Italian area) SWMBO ordered a cappuccino, said she enjoyed it but still preferred my home efforts from the Bezzera, perhaps she was playing the diplomat ;D
Had a chat to the owner, complimented him on his coffee, and talked about things espresso for a few minutes, very pleasant guy, as we were walking out the door he handed me a 250 gram tin of the blend they use, more about that in another post.
All in all a very successful evening. ;)

Just spent a couple of days in the Southern Vales area of SA, one of the highlights was an evening meal at the Victory Hotel http://www.victoryhotel.com.au/index.html about an hour south of Adelaide.
Must admit I was a little apprehensive when one of the people at D'arenberg wines suggested a hotel, how wrong you can be, the food was well above average, service excellent, comprehensive wine cellar and the coffee was well above the standard served at most coffee bars, well worth a visit. ;)

D'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz is one of my favourite wines of all time!  In a previous incarnation as a Sommelier I used to drink truck loads of the stuff!

hi guys - just getting back to SA got me thinking about what it is that makes the level of coffee in Adelaide so much lower than in any of the other major cities - started me thinking if it might be to do with the predominance of chains in SA. It's pretty amazing - Bean Bar, Uno Caffe, 'Funk' [yes, really] and of course the ubiquitous Cibo - wondered if that might have something to do with it...

Has anyone told the owner (Simply Coffee) that they have a problem.

Its seems they take priority on the beans they roast/sell, and well, as for the coffee they make - thats secondary. I gotta say its a pretty stupid business decision. I have had coffee there last year and this was before I knew of anything of simply coffee (I aint been long in Adel) besides the roasting they do - my coffee wasnt nice and i remember saying to my other half we wont be back. (and i havent)

Welcome along :) Adelaide has come a long way from closing down at 12 on a Saturday but still a long way to go. The coffee scene these days at least has a few good people getting in and making some noise and putting up some better coffees than it used to have a couple of years ago.

At least for you guys you can jump a plane and be in Melbourne quicker than I can if you need a good coffee fix   >:D
Steady on Tim, Adelaide ain't as bad as people make it out, plenty of good places if you know your way around.
As a regular visitor to Melb I can assure you I've had more than my share of crap coffee over there.
Not sure why Adelaide is singled out for special treatment but I don't believe it deserves it. ;)

Back between 12 and about 5 years ago I used to spend a reasonable amount of time in Adelaide. Coffee was not the best brewed option available at the time so I opted for the Beer instead ;D

think I agree with Tim Drybean - apart from Ian C's BAr 9 and Fiefy's place, I can't think of anywhere decent; would like to know the places you recommend.

Evening Lars, you could do worse then the Coffee Barun, Coffee Craft on South Road is certainly worth a visit, there really are plenty to choose from.
Do you live in Adelaide? :)

You guys have mentioned some of the places worth visiting. Coffee branch in the city also is very good, i've not been to coffee craft yet.

I spose i should also add that i'm doing the rounds in Adelaide visiting 52 coffee shops over the next year and writing about it on my blog. Exciting times with week 17 just done.

Feel free to add your blog to your signature too should make for an interesting read for the other Adelaide locals and or visitors. I will pop it into the blog thread I have running too  :)

I had a bit of a chat to 'A' a little while back about getting Best Cafes doing a bit more too. I see the SA section in particular is very poorly represented if you SA guys want to add some good new ones, and or reviews as you get around. http://www.bestcafes.com.au/cafes/sa

I promise I won't bag SA coffee anymore  >:D
