Hi all,

As you'll have seen in the announcement, we have implemented a new forum after the previous version collapsed under the weight of a decade of operation, upgrades, plugins, etc.

Rather than try and fix a creaky old architecture, we elected to migrate to something that's still in active development. There were a few choices of platform, and while there was at least one other that I would very much have liked to trial, the hardware/software requirements were a lot higher, as was the very specific technical skills required - and I was never able to successfully migrate the content across.

Yes, there's some content missing here as well, specifically post attachments, but those exist in the database, and I hope to get them back.

Yes, some features aren't present. Some will come back, some will be better, some won't be back. Tapatalk is one of the latter; most active development forum platforms have stopped support due to very low user adoption rates, and this is one of them. There's no longer a plugin available for Tapatalk. Sorry about that.

At present I'm working on social integration (you can already login and register with Facebook, Google, Twitter and LinkedIn is coming), and the mobile version will be getting some upgrades as well.

In the meantime, the new platform is faster, leaner and easier to use, and I think it'll be something that will stand us in good stead for the next decade of coffee discussions.

Regards,

Kesley

Hi Guys

I thought I'd share something a bit off topic but nevertheless interesting.

A friend of mine who did his PhD in the early 2000's was one of the first guys who used various research methods to extract meanings from online forums, which were pretty new back then.

One of his case studies was on a coffee forum, and he developed a qualitative research technique to gain insight into the types of people who post in such forums.

It's an interesting read, and it is interesting how someone who is not a coffee drinker, can use algorithms to to understand coffee culture.

P.S. a lot of trashing Starbucks goes on

Starts on page 10. This is just a short paper, his dissertation is also available online, the coffee section is a bit bigger. I remember the first time I read it, I was just nodding my head the whole time

Google "The Field Behind the Screen: Using Netnography For Marketing Research in Online Communities"

It's on the NYU website, should be the first result, a PDF.

Cheers

A small group of my friends got together and formed a Coffee Co-op. Our purpose is to source high quality green coffee beans that WE like, but cannot buy from normal sources.
I buy the specialty coffee (micro-lots) on behalf of this Co-op.

To cut a long story short, we have surplus beans, as one of the group has moved overseas and cannot take his allotment.

If you are interested in high quality beans (85+ scores), please PM for further details.
I do not want to list specifics here, but the beans are 2016 crops, small batches (micro-lots) and not available from any site sponsor, or green bean retailer. Happy to ship in 1kg lots. Full details via PM.

This is not a business, nor will it ever be. It is a way of sourcing beans that suit our needs and tastes, via a Co-op.

Any questions, queries etc, please do it via PM.

Hi everyone.

Was having a coffee and thought would it be a great idea to get everyone to have some fun showing off the most basic and easiest of latte art achievable, which is the heart.

To make a heart, make an espresso which has decent crema, then simply steam and texture milk (full cream is best but skim or hi lo milk is okay).
Tap and swirl the milk on the bench, tilt the cup, then pour from a height til halfway up. Bring the jug down and wiggle steadily as you are pouring near the surface of the milk. Then lift the jug and at same time draw a line of milk across to finish. This will suck the lines into the middle, thus making a heart.

Tip. My best heart are the kind where i wiggle the jug upon pouring just a few times, then keep the jug steady but keep pouring, then lift and draw across. This will result in a nice heart with a few lines on the outer heart for artistic value and a solid white in the middle for contrast.

Have a go. Don't judge others and have fun displaying your work.

Imagine an unexplained loud but dull thud, run to a front window and look out, and see a small hatchback reversing "at speed" out from the front wall of your roastery and hitting another car in the middle of the road....

Imagine there had still been people sitting in that outdoor cafe area....or staff sitting at the desk directly behind the window and wall.

And imagine that someone has to deal with the aftermath, which will be to demolish a section of front wall and rebuild...

By and large, the driver was unhurt.

All of this is considerably higher than the road level. The vehicle has to first jump a kerb, travel uphill and then jump a 300mm timber retaining wall to the outdoor seating area, before hitting the front of the building. Which probably "washed off" enough momentum that the vehicle didnt demolish the wall and end up inside the building....

Hmmm...certainly put a dampener on my afternoon.

We traveled over to Kapunda S.A. in the motor home on Friday, 170 km from home, where Heather did a one day water colour workshop yesterday (Sat) with Alan Ramachandran https://alanlouisartist.wordpress.com/gallery-2-south-australia/ an artist whose work we saw on display in the Flinders Ranges a few months ago and greatly admired.

At the end of the day this was Heather's effort, must admit I was quite impressed. :thumb:

Probably nothing most thinkers have not come to terms with, however my take on the subject is that many so called news items we read nowadays are little more than thinly disguised promotions for commercial interests.
What has prompted this post is a report by Paul Barry on Media watch the other night http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s4429222.htm
I know, I'm a grumpy old cynic, regardless, it all seems pretty obvious, Fairfax and Murdoch press both seem to have their snouts well and truly in the trough, and the public seem to lap it up.
