What Coffee are you roasting this week

A nice balmy Adelaide evening & the first roast since a major cooler meltdown last time. I am now the proud owner of a top of the line 😉 $40 Homelite shop vac from Bunnings. It's made a huge difference and now no more beans coated in melted pool pipe... Also, back to back cooling is no longer an issue. The MM was so good I did another kilo and bagged it up. Have to think two weeks ahead with that stuff. Next was a kilo of Yirg Harfusa - this lot will wait a week then be cold brewed, filtered and matured in the fridge for a while. It's great as an iced coffee 😛 😛 And lastly, a kilo of Sulawesi Toarco Jaya. I wasn't all that impressed with this one last time, but will let it rest 14 days this time before opening the bag. Enough work for one night, and now off for another MM....

I've just done a roast of ghimbi for solo, hopefully it will taste ok 🙂 Oh no reflection on the type of photos the phone can take, it's all about the user 😃

Here is my roast of the Ethiopian Ghimbi shape_shifter sent me. This was my first attempt. Despites rumours to the contrary, I did not burn anything. 70g went into my popcorn roaster. A little bit of oil on some beans when pulled, some beans have chips on them from explosions.

Since becoming a roaster and reading a fair bit about blends and blending, I've noticed that quite a few blends have a minor percentages of Robusta included. So I decided to get my hands on some, Indian Monsoon Robusta Parchment R (don't know what the R stands for). I roasted some of this and decided to have a short black using this bean and nothing else. My God, is that in your face or what!! Is that why small amounts are used in blends? One thing I must say, it had a beautiful Crema. Look at the large amount of chaff that has not been removed during the roasting process. This photograph was taken in full sun and even though it looks like a very uneven roast, it looks almost perfect to the natural eye.

They look great Divey. Where did you get em? I bet Shape Shifter would love a big old bathch of this as a present. :rofl: yesterday I did 500g of Indonesian Java Kalistat. I let these coast into RSC and pulled them a bit later than usual. A very even roast and the bouquet 24hrs on is very pungent. Can't wait! Also did 300g of Brazil Daterra Opus 1. This will go on my must have list when ordering. Thank you CH and Bean Green!

Just roasted 500g of Rwanda Gisenyi (the last of this bean that I have) for a cold soak of 5L liquid. Also roasted 500g of Bolivian from Mycuppa (almost finished it *cry*) for my espresso for the week (might last a bit longer with me drinking all these iced coffees!)

Nice one! Postage to Briz would be the deal breaker for us given that Brisbane suppliers carry a great range of choice but it's worth noting... Thanks. Ive been a bit naughty and cracked open the Java for a double shot piccolo. I swear I'm drinking fruit n nut chocolate. Yum! This is a seriously good bean and I'll be good and eek it out over the next three weeks.

1kg of pre-roast blend 50:50, Festive bean swap 'X', and Festive bean swap 'Y'...... ??? and another kg of Festive bean swap 'Z'. Bean 'Z' came up quite nicely, and the blend should mature well. 😉

Just finished in the FZ-RR Roaster: 200g Yemen Sanani mocca 200g Brazil Daterra Sweet collection 200g Haiti Grand Cru and a green bean blend 200g: 50% Brazil 30% Sumatra Aceh Wet Hulled Gr1 20% Ethiopian Trabocca Harrar. Tasting from tomorrow morning.

Nice mix! I went off the Daterra for a long time until I discovered the Opus 1 low caffein version. Did you use the same beans as a base for your awesome looking espresso blend above?

For the Espresso blend I used Brazil BSCA blend from Ministry Grounds. [Using up end of bags]. I am drinking a flat white at the moment, and it is very nice. A well balanced and smooth espresso, that is also nice in milk. Tastes like "coffee". My wife loves a 50/50 blend of the Yemen and the Brazil Daterra in a latte. As the Yemen develops the flavours change daily.

Just roasted some Nicaragua Cup of Excellence Lot 13 Misael Saucedo Olivera Washed Maragogype sun dried 'La Bendicion' Los Plans, Las Mans - 1300masl - yep, its a mouthfeel in every sense of the word! Did a 5min preheat @ 200C then added the green beans to the KKTO and I must say (I normally add the beans at the beginning of the preheat) - the difference to the roast was astounding! First the roast came up to temperature, second I shave five minutes off of my usual roast times, and third i am really happy with the evenness and consistency of the roast proof will be in the cup tomorrow! p

Perfect evening for one legged roasting as it cools down after a warm day here in Adelaide. 1kg of Harrar, this lot earmarked for my friendly aluminium supplier in NSW. Then, a kg of favourite MM, which should be ready in about 10-14 days.

Marathon roasting night made a lot easier thanks to the KKTO:

300g Finca La Candelilla 100% Geisha for me via Aeropress @ Work
200g Black Pearl for me via Aeropress @ Work
1kg Nicaragua COE 2011 - 1/2 for me, 1/2 for a mate, will let rest at least 8 days
500g Colombian Supremo SW Decaf, for the Mrs
300g Java Kalistat & 200g Colombian Supremo for me @ home - rest 2 days, 3 if possible, should tide me over until COE is ready

And then I can do it all again in 2 weeks when I take some more leave 🙂
