Breville's new dual boiler machine BES900

WotB

All the pre-launch hype over and done with. Remember just how good the Sunbeam ones were, at least until 6-12 months down the track. Appliance manufacturers are still appliance manufacturers, no matter how much R&D $$$ they shove into it.

WotB I don't believe that for a second. The company my partner works for was in a bad way in regards to what he does. He was hired and put in there, they are working on a huge project at present, with the right people in there it has all fallen into place and the product will wipe the floor with anything else out there. Sometimes it just takes the right people at the right time to pull off something others think aren't possible for the company. I'm completely willing to eat humble pie if the Dual Boiler turns out to be crap and I'll buy myself a rotary Vivaldi but at present I'm not taking much notice of the nay sayers 😃

I am in the hope camp too as it will be a great thing for coffee generally however I have had direct exposure to appliance companies and service life cycles before and not in a good way. The biggest single problem I see is all items pitched like this is who they are sold by (generally hardly normal et al) and the level of customer training given being close to or if not NIL. Real world users are not machines or employees of company X trying to replicate the real world use. As we are adults here and don't mind talking about good and bad all will be revealed on the reliability front over the first 6 months. If that goes well then it will set a new benchmark in terms of $$ for home espresso machines.

Will they be running a small course like sunbeam? That really seemed to help folk out. It really add value to the end user too. I would like to hear more about parts availability, servicing and product support from breville when the marketing settles down a bit.

DoubleRistretto

does anyone actually know anyone who's bought one of these units?

I will question why we aussies have to pay $1500 and the US is reported as being $1200.

interesting, with respect to the US price being lower [almost seems 'counter-inuitive!] - however, remember they have inherent pricing advantages due to larger population [economies of scale] and sharper competition...

yes, must say I'm curious also!! A

I've yet to hear a negative comment on these appliances, wonder why that would be. :🙂

UNM

Nobody has bought one yet. They are not available for sale. I think ETA in the shops is next month. That is why things have gone all quiet - it is in production, but not yet in the wild. I, like many others, am adopting a wait and see attitude. By the time it hits the factory clearance stores in 6 months or so, we should have a good idea how it performs in the real world.

Dry_bean

We've seen mountains of positive spin about this appliance coming from those within the industry so I really don't see any harm in a little healthy cynicism, I suspect performance will be somewhere between the wildly ambitious claims of the manufacturers and the doubts of the detractors. Few new products hit the market and immediately tick all the boxes claimed by the maker. The question I ask myself is would I be prepared to pay around $1500 for an espresso machine made by Breville? the answer is a resounding no, but then what would I know. :🙂

ah... ok Ewan - good point [thanks]! 😉

I for one wish Breville all the luck in the world I say this from an Australian point of view on an Australian design by an Australian company exporting to the world & god knows we need that Pity it is not made by Australians I hope the design will stand the test of time, I have not made any comments preferring to wait a while and see how it all pans out with every day use by all types of users KK

The USD to AUD thing is partially offset by margins but also by the 5% duty and then the 10% GST compounding to 15.5% of the difference so $200+ of the rise is easy to explain. I don't think it has been mentioned here yet but Mark Prince of Coffeegeek fame has done a review here http://coffeegeek.com/proreviews/firstlook/brevilledualboiler still paints a overly rosy picture of it in some ways as the proof of all appliances is in the medium to longer term.

G'day Tim, read this first look the other day, Mark states early on that (This is not meant to be a review and is based on a late prototype machine. I will try to avoid some editorializing and test conclusions where I can, but there are times where opinion enters into the commentary. It is important to stress this is not a full review and is not meant to be.) Time will take care of the detail. 😉

Hi guys - we are including the new Breville machine in our range based on how much the Smart grinder impressed us. We've asked one of the forum members to review it for us - just to get a real users point of view - without the marketing hype. When we do these reviews, they are posted straight to the forum, we don't edit them, censor or impose boundries so it will be a warts and all review. Of course it will be one persons opinion, but will be as unbiased as possible. We always try to have a couple of

reads just like another marketing review 2 year warranty is good but will it still be just another expensive throw away appliance most breville repairers wont know how to fix it, let alone understand how it works

Only if its not a chore for shipping to QLD I will put my hand up for a Guinea Pig tester as I have the room & bench space to compare with the BZ40 side by side Please note that I have never owned a Breville or Sunbeam machine Its always been manual brewing methods, Prosumer or Commercial Machines KK

Same goes here - I'd be happy to review! I've only owned a Lelit in "proper" espresso machines, so it would be good to see just what double the price gets. I too have a dedicated coffee station that would fit both machines. I really want this machine to be good, and I think on paper and initial impressions, it will be. The real proof, as most people here are saying is in the longevity of the machine.

I am still quietly excited about the BDB. I am hoping it will speak for itself when it's out there being reviewed and used and being an early adopter I'm hoping I won't have to eat humble pie ;D

askthecoffeeguy

I'd be interested to have a play on one - I'm often asked to recommend equipment through my cafe and around this pricepoint it's always been the Rancilio Silvia or the Sunbeam cafe series, to date, as I've spent a fair bit of time on both these machines - and whilst the sunbeam has it's faults it is still capable of making very good coffee, and the after sales service is excellent It will be interesting to see how the breville dual boiler stacks up - would love to do a side by side comparison !

I would reccomend, however, that anyone interested in the new Breville machine wait unit it has been in the market for a while, look out for reviews and feedback -both here and elsewhere, and not be enticed by early take up offers.

ok so I'm confused. I checked your website and it says you are accepting pre-orders??
