........... a) This mad frenzy just results in poorly serviced customers and perpetuates an ameaturish looking industry run by cowboys. b) I think many businesses in our industry should be looking to competitors as potential strategic partners, rather than being threatened by a little healthy competition.......
.......well actually from my point of view as an experienced coffee merchant, yes and no.... the mad frenzy to gain clients at all costs in order to compete with others resuts in clients becoming totally overserviced and trains them to think that overservicing is "normal". Then, clients that are being serviced in a perfectly normal professional manner are given to believe they are being underserviced......go figure. The cost of "servicing" clients is hidden but never the less a legitimate and sometimes substantial cost to the supplier. Examples: clients obtaining demanding more than one delivery a week clients obtaining demanding breakdown service to their equipment for which they are not inclined or simply refuse to pay clients obtaining demanding "quality control" visits over and above the regular number of supplier representative visits budgeted over a period of time. By and large this also means the client is passing the buck for their own product quality control.. Huge topic, not quite so easy to analyse, & it could be said that the cowboys are actually all the newcomers taking advantage of low start up costs to go into coffee roasting and supply business and end up reducing margins and increasing service costs to break in, in an atmosphere of ever increasing costs...... b) Yes there has been lots of healthy competition in the last 15 years and it has got us where we are now where our Australian espresso culture is as good as any you will fiond eslewhere but as stated by someone else above, its now out of control (my words) and all that may happen is that new brands will take market share from established brands fragmenting the currently available market rather than growing it, while reducing margins and increasing costs exponentially for everyone. Just another opinion. Regardz, Attilio very first Crema site sponsor
