derrilex Some pics of KK's timber. I'm really struggling to get a confirmed ID, but looking at images on the net it appears either spotty gum, turpentine, string bark or blackbutt - all of which were readily available in QLD at the time that the donor house was built.
Koffee_Kosmo I agree its very heavy timber for the size So it may be very dense like a hardwood or similar KK
derrilex Definitely aussie hardwood from the east coast. I'll take a sample to my timber supplier and see what he reckons
UNM Koffee Kosmo wrote: I agree its very heavy timber for the size So it may be very dense like a hardwood or similar KK Just to be pedantic (who me?), density of timber is not necessarily an indication if It is hardwood or not. Balsa is a hardwood. It probably is though.
derrilex Do I have any volunteers for the tried and proven "wolloping of forehead" hardness test ? ???
Koffee_Kosmo Today I was kindly given by a admirer of my coffee and regular visitor to our home Some turning blanks Real Brazil Mahogany Piece 1) - 23.5" (59 cm) long X 2.5" (6.5 cm) square - should be good for a min of 3 handles Piece 2) - 12" (30.5 cm) long X 4" (10 cm) square ( I am not certain if this piece Brazil Mahogany but looks the same) Some other wood in similar sizes such as Spotted Gum and Camphor Laurel well as a back up Photo 3 - large piece is Camphore Laurel Photo 4 - Stotted Gum KK
Koffee_Kosmo I an undecided if I should go with ? And I need a helping hand to choose Brazil Mahogany or Australian Spotted Gum ( Photos in above post ) I like the Camphor Lourel as well however it's not enough to do a set? But it would made for a handsome tampe handle or possibly 2 handles of differing sizes KK
