SS: the reason your 1st crack rolled into second crack would have been because at 7:30, the power has only *just* (or just about to, can't remember) dropped. It's for this reason that with those figures, it might be beneficial to use 1P P1 C and crack the door (I put the end of the paintbrush in there) within a few seconds of the start of 1st crack. The heat loss isn't as great as you might think and then if it hasn't hit second crack within a few minutes, close the door fully. (FYI, with 350g on that roast profile, I wouldn't even hit second crack by the end of the full cycle, which, btw, I think is 21:30, not 22:30).

Looking good SS. I normally do 300g roast on 1IbP4D or 1IbP2C. I find he later to have plenty of time on the clock, even if I load up 350g into my unit. I do though bang he brush in between 1c (rolling)to get a reasonable time between 1st crack and 2nd crack for 1IbP4D. I externally cool, in under a minute. for 1IbP2C, I find the brush in at 1crack, I get well over 3.5-4min between 1st and nd crack. So I close the door to ensure time between cracks is less than 5min.... Pull & ext cool. On a side note I have pushed 400g of MM through and that was the defining batch in which myself & the OH decided MM at 100% would be a staple in our house!! I think, need to check my records but I used 1IbP2D to ensure I got through 2nd crack!

also my fav roast setting for espresso is as follows: 350g of greens 1lb P2 C I stop the roast with about 5.30-5.00 minutes on the clock remaining depending on ambient temps pretty consistent getting the beans to about first snaps of 2nd Crack

my routine is fairly similar with the beans ive done so far, 300g of greens, 1Lb P2 but i always open my door fully for 10 seconds during rolling 1st crack; then I try and pull at the very start of second crack, again opening the door fully during the first 2 minutes of the cooling cycle. love the behmor!

lemoo I don't know that I'll ever get that far with my roasts, having 5 minutes left on the clock, obviously have to wait and see on that one though. TB I also thought that after I hit the cool button, I left the door closed for a while and then opened it, I will be trying the hit cool and completely open the door on the next roast.

Richard and I were discussing adding the thermocouple, as I said to him, I way to pedantic to just shove the beans in and hope for the best, I need some sort of indication that I'm hitting the temps I want 🙂 So here is my thermocouple attachment, the way it's set up is so I can have the thermocouple sitting all the way in or out further, it's also secure.

That left side gets hot. Hope the plastic holds up..but looks good 🙂

On a suggestion from Richard about what to roast a peaberry on I tried 1 P1, I couldn't pick C, got confused and didn't pick anything, I probably should have pressed B. The above setting gave me 18 minutes on the clock and I still had 7 and a half minutes left when I hit cool. Preheat 2 mins 183 degrees 1C 7:35 304 degrees 2C 10:30 288 degrees press cool open door 2 minutes 120 degrees close door There was about a 1 minute almost silence before 2C started. Well the result smelled like peaberry and certainly looked like the other peaberry roasts I've done.

Same tendencies here - between that and the batch size I'm tempted to go back to my Corretto or get a KKTO. But then again the coffee comes out reasonably nicely done and it's less fuss - as said on another tread ... use your senses, don't worry/be happy and have a beer at hand. In your photo it looks like the thermocouple would be right above the elements? It would be interesting to see a graph through the roast - pity it's so hard to get one into the bean mass.

I know you were worried you'd burned this roast, but look at the chaff still left in the middle of most beans. It's only *just* hit second crack, so should be a winner.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that. When I cracked the door on my first roast of this, a mild updraft threw out a few teaspoons worth of chaff which caught fire upon hitting the open air. For a few seconds, I felt like a magical coffee wizard.
