Yes it is interesting and dont forget that in their home country, depending on your locality, once you get away from "established coffee centres", they can be a real lifesaver. Over here, there was simply nothing for them to teach us as we already have a much stronger, wider, more well established coffee culture than they do, size of population aside. Its all relative, and interesting artikill.

Wow. So much in that story. Peet's is on the market for a forward PE of 33!? One wonders how a buyer would realize that sort of margin. I had no idea Green Mountain even existed but it seems like a very slick operation. Nonetheless the article alludes to an organization whose margins may not sustain direct competition with its central product. It will be really interesting how this plays out but I reckon Starbucks will give both companies a wide birth until they can get them for a fire sale. Billabong or Pacific Brands shares anyone?

Australia's an interesting place, banking wise. We've got a much more established Internet banking, interconnected banking and eftpos system than many other western countries, although they've caught up in recent years. But our population density has meant fewer cutting edge startup financial services are available here. Square is one example, Mint was another and now Movenbank. It's a pity because Aussies would truly embrace these sorts of solutions, particularly the 'stick it to da man' Square-like systems. We are in danger if dongleitis however - square, PayPal and Eventbrite have all got mobile dongles for data capture and payments. The last thing we want is to need a different plastic block for every card.
