Yes, its better to go by weight because the volume is affected by the proportion of crema, its also easy to be precise - simply tare the cup on a small balance as you pour the shot.
Had to go back to find this post Elvin from Sixty West recommends a 30ml shot (inc crema) in 27-32 secs to get the best from their blends. This is using a std pump machine .. so with my lever, there is a pause between the 1st and 2nd lever extractions. Although a 30ml shot is probably standard for a 6oz cup .. I have preferred a 20ml shot, as I like the concentrated 'richness' of the smaller shot. I did try a 30ml .. and it appears that the longer the extraction .. the more layers of flavour you get .. so I am currently going for my cake and eating it too .. by compromising with a 25ml shot, instead of my usual 20ml. So far .. results are very good. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am also trying out galumay's suggestion to weigh the pour .. now that my new digital pocket scale has arrived - rather than going by volume, especially seeing with all the crema produced, it is too difficult to gauge how much the crema will settle to give you the required volume.. as galumay says. I sit the scales under my smaller piccolo cup .. and now have to get the exact timing as to when to take the cup away during the pour without the coffee ending up all over my scales. Seeing it was my first shot at this, and managed not to .. it should be no problem. At least the smaller cup doesn't get caught on the PF .. which is good. Would be easier with a pump machine .. press the button and the pour stops. 😉

Hey Moon Maybe you should reduce the dose a bit, to say 16 g. This might help with the flow. When I had a Lusso I struggled to put more than 16g in the basket. Even now with my Achille and its 58mm basket I'm still only putting 17g in the basket each time. So try lowering the dose without adjusting the grind and see what happens? Also I used to do the Fellini slightly differently: 1. Hold the lever down until a drop appears, then release; then 2. Push the lever down again just as it reaches the horizontal position, then let it go right to the top. See how you go! Cheers Sniff
Had to go even further back to find this one. Funny how the tips you are given are not always immediately taken up .. but end up on the money after you've been doing the rounds experimenting .. only to come to the same conclusion. The last few times .. I have used 16g instead of 18g .. and finding Sniff's fellini move the way to go. Went back to littleroundman's polish only tamp a few weeks ago, after trying some light and medium tamps .. and has been working a treat ever since. Great advice in here .. if only I listened the first time .. oh well .. we get there eventually. :thumb:
