Just reading this at work. More or less agree with previous 2 posts. I travel europe reguarly. Although, my perception of coffee is from an expresso machine, no perculators, or stove tops etc. they dont count. so when you say coffee, if it sells beans and has a machine. But saying that, italy average, germany below average france average and getting worse. (yes pods in their stores everywhere) dont know re portugal and spain above average. Amazed at a few out of the way places there made me really excellent coffee out of very impressive machines, with lovely fresh roasted beans. all the above places have good pockets but you have to find them, whereas spain was pretty good anywhere. their coffee houses were truly great. Italy of course has some great pockets, but also some overated places, stand up espresso served just luke warm, for 2 euro was a waste. Temp is debatable but often was too cold too enjoy. As for rome etc. Terrible, overpriced dish water is often the case. Pizza, forget it. They claim pizza as their own but isnt really from italy, and sadly other countries kill it. including australia. America, drip filter still rules or starbucks so not worth mentioning really, just watch friends etc, they drink 1 litre coffees in paper cups. a joke really. have to disagree with first post too, their are stand up bars in australia, quite a few scattered around, but usually a stool is there. why stand, but anyway all little bars will let you stand, order a quick espresso and go in 2 minutes. And thank god we dont have to put up with the smoking ala europe. french and italians especially all smoking in stand up bars, very very off puttting and wouldnt stand near them. we have a far better cleaner system. good for coffee not espresso, its both or nothing. cheers all
