After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

WBC 2011 brought to you by .... Nespresso!

Does anyone else find it amusing that a major sponsor of the World Barista Championship 2011 is Nespresso?  :)

  • Not really, sad more like it. If the WBC is about speciality coffee then it totally detracts from the brand, I don't care how much money they threw at it!!! I think there would have been a lot of discussions as to the pros and cons but from my corner, FAIL!!!! Brett
  • Nespresso a major sponsor of the WBC this year ... huh?? A [this was typed about 8 minutes after E61's [above] but sums up my view, so I'm leaving it up!!]
  • WTF - What The Fudge were they thinking KK
  • Nescafe Blend 43 will be next years sponsors!  :o

Nah, it's an international competition - would have to be International Roast.

;D and the milk will be sponsored by Nestle coffee whitener... try getting latte art with that mate.  :P ;D :D
  • They should have an unofficial barista comp using Nespresso gear and coffee and see how it gets scored.

At least they wouldn't have to worry about which grinder to use, or to bring up to WBC spec  ;D.
  • I reckon the tech judges will have a field day.
  • It's always amazing what money will do. I would have thought the organisers would have felt differently but maybe they really needed the money, sometimes you have to do something you might not feel is right to get a better result later on.
  • a bit like Flymo sponsoring the World 4-stroke motor mower champs [if there was such a thing]! dR :-\
  • ^ There probably is, in America...  ::) I wonder if the bulk manufacturer of plastic tampers that come machines will get into the act?  If you're going to go  low brow, you might as well go low, low brow!  :)
  • Oy!  You've still got to come and change my white LED's for blue LED's...anyway, don't I remember you tinkering with a machine at some stage and adding blue LED's to it, Mr Pot Calling the Kettle Black???  ;D

What about "led" manufacturers   ;D :o ::) :-* Sorry... Ya disco machine is OK....
    huh??  ???
  • I can certainly understand the raised eyebrows but it wasn't that long ago you'd see Escort cigarette signs at footy games and we had the Benson & Hedges world series cricket cup.  I would guess most business involved in the specialty coffee industry are SMEs who wouldn't have the dough to be a major sponsor at an event this big.
  • talking about WBC - looks like they're starting judges' calibration on June 1. Does anyone know anyone who's going this year?
  • The fact that it's in Columbia this year doesn't help dR :o
  • yes, I agree, would actually be interested in Bogota - if I were a little younger & without two dependents, that is... just seems there's usually a pretty hardcore group of Aussies who would go to any WBC destination, but haven't caught on to any vibe about it at all this year. A
