After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

  • Never had a coffee from maccas Lucky I never have Regarding the article on trained baristas I went on a cruise last year and the highly trained baristas on P&O were not very good Advertising can be so easy Getting it right in the cup is not KK
  • The rollout of McCafe's saw the end of a lot of smaller operators.  Granted, those operators may have put out a product of similar quality. You can't just put in a machine, buy RFA beans, train monkeys to operate the machine, and expect magic to end up in the cup.
  • Muck D's coffee peaked back in the 90's. A fresh pot of their drip brewed was better than the average espresso of the day. To quote myself off twitter  :)
  • I have to say that Macca's coffee is preferable by far too some of the instant swill I was served in in various country road houses during my recent Vic/NSW trip, one of em charged me $4 for a cup of instant black >:(

While that is shocking, people seem happy to pay $4 for a Lipton (or similar) teabag in some hot water, which to me is about the same, yet other places have Twinings, leaf tea, etc for same price. Same goes for juice. I went to a place for breakfast the other day, and $4.50 for "Berri" Apple juice (not cloudy, just clear, sugary stuff - $3/3L from Coles stuff). For that money I want a glass of at least a premium bottled juice! Mid twenties, and I already sound like a bitter old man...lol.
  • yes, this was The Australian article on the same topic: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/industry-sectors/maccas-issues-mea-cuppa-over-the-state-of-its-coffee/story-e6frg9h6-1226066777656 wonder how genuine the 'mea culpa' is? I see a good marketing story, to be honest... certainly a way to get publicity & [apparently] pass on the marketing message: 'we're serious about coffee'... A
  • I had a few good coffees from maccs years ago when they first started the McCafe thing, maybe they had better barista working for them at that point in time.  They are damn awful now, you can't even drink it and the McCafe sign seems to even been used for a full auto machine that makes an even worse coffee than their barista. I wish them all the best though, you never know they might get it right if they get all the elements together and keep the training up.
  • does anyone know who roasts their coffee?
  • Not sure but I think Mocopan rings a bell
  • Hmmmm - at the risk of sounding like a bit of a snob.....  ::) Is someone who operates a super automatic coffee dispensing machine a Barista? It's not as if the operator of the machine has any real control or impact over the process. I think maybe reviewing their beans and roast might be a good start but if you are going to train "Barista's" and tell your customers a Barista will prepare their coffee then at least give them the right machine to do just that.
  • exactly [assuming the machine is clean] if it's pre-programmed and all the operator has to do is push a button, then the only other variable is...
  • I just can't see anything about this new scheme working, I don't eat maccas, gluten intolerant, but my OH does, I would say out of 10 times they would get something wrong with the order at least seven times, and that includes something as simple as a sundae!!! I'm hoping that at least they do look at their beans and people might get a half decent cup of coffee.
  • actually, it's interesting that they've also pr spun the 'trade press' with this, re-inforcing my view that it's part of a co-ordinated campaign; see: http://www.franchise.net.au/Article/McDonalds-invests-in-better-coffee-offering/529988.aspx
  • 'A new, richer, darker blend' out to match it with charbucks and GJ's for overroasted depth. With spin like that they should run for government. Novel approach McD's, try fresh GOOD QUALITY well roasted beans good manual machines and proper experienced caring staff.

isn't this still the key problem... ???
  • have we established who does their coffee for them?
  • They use Mocopan (Cerebos) who have a roastery here in Melbourne and are upping the training at all McD's accounts with qaulity trainers, strict cleaning procedures and better barista skills. There are many worse places to get a coffee!
  • During my recent 2500 km road trip through SA, Vic and NSW one thing was painfully evident, with a couple of exceptions, the coffee available en route was swill. The weather being cold and miserable I took every opportunity for a brew, tried everything, motels, mom and pop road houses, cafe
