After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

What to do in Ipswich (and where to eat & get coffee)

edited January 1970 in Off-topic
I'm off to the QLD Eisteddfod in Ipswich tomorrow with the fam. We're staying right in the centre of town in the Metro International.

There's no food making facilities at all.

We'll be taking the aeropress and hario grinder, but we need to find a few decent inexpensive places to eat also.

Any recommendations would be appreciated, especially for breakfast venues!

  • Surely Sarah Sullivan should supply succor swiftly saving sweet singers sad starvation. I may enter the poetry section... Sorry can't help but plenty of regular fast food joints in the city.  Breakfast? Box of cereal and an esky for the beer... Isn't that how choirs tour? I seem to remember a Bris Chorale tour to Toowoomba where you had to rescue me from an amorous soprano/bunny-boiler.  Watch-ya singing'?
  • If I was on my own, no probs. the pregnant wife and young boy make it slightly more tricky!! I was just thinking about that trip the other day - specifically the absolutely dire pub room we'd booked. I think I slept on a towel above the bedding! I'm not doing any solo stuff, but we are doing 'The Counterparts' and 'Earth Song', among others. Counterparts in particular is big fun sing. I'm conducting the ladies (including Sarah!!) in 'Fly Singing Bird' and 'Morning Tide'.
  • Nice!  The Earthsongs is very stylized American so much that for ages I thought it was just another Whitacre work!  The Lovelock is very British so that's a nice contrast.  Good old Dr L... His first year harmony book is so wonderfully concrete sequential  :thumb: are you allowed violins for your Elgar?  You should program the Songs of the Bavarian Highlands for a concert. They are awesome!  You could like get a special guest conductor in for the concert and pay him lots of money.  :thumb:   I'll PM you some vids that have made it onto YouTube as an audition....  :pan  ::)!  Toi toi toi a domani!
  • I was surprised at how well the old biddies handle Earthsong, they do quite a credible job of it. But what surprised me is that we're also doing a hell of a job of Counterparts, even if the sops can't quite manage the soft high A. Unfortunately we couldn't get a violinist and asked special dispensation to be able to use a keyboard on stage.... and they agreed, but demanded it be on the 'strings' setting!!  :head:  But still, not sure I could handle more Mr "No Phrase Should EVER Repeat" Lovelock, at least not just yet. Given the length of the Bavarian, I think most would expire before it was halfway through.
  • Geez this is a side of you I didn't know about Kelsey - You should roost up at BrettH's place - only 15 mins down the road from "the switch"  >:D :D
  • At the very least we could prevail on the H family for a decent coffee... ;)
  • Indeed. You might get put to work on his bathroom renno though

I thought he was aiming for improvement, not demolition?
  • I have the tasting notes for Dunlop grout V Davco Grout: Green Apples and Demolition dust for the Davco and I just can't get the machine to pull a second shot with the Dunlop.  Oh lord the dust... I hate the dust.
  • Dont ya just love waking up in the morning to find dust slugs coming out of the corners of your eyes. Amazing what the body does overnight. Bloody rennos. :head:
  • What gets me is that no amount of Dexter style plastic and tape can hold the stuff.  It's omni-f^#{ing-present!  Very apt or Easter!  When ya commin' back through K?
  • Sunday morning. Don't think we'll hang around to listen to the solos.

A shame  :(.  At this stage we'll be heading over friends at Bracken Ridge.  Did ya win????

I'm doing it I'm doing it!!
  • Nah. We sucked in the madrigals but got a highly commended for the sacred. We might do ok in the ladies and chiefs, but I hold out little hope for the men.
