The grinder cometh

edited January 1970 in Grinders
Finally I have a grinder I can proudly display in my kitchen. Sorry to sound snobby but the 480 has its place and its not on my bench - unless as a spare should the worst happen. I picked this up off ebay for $450. The owners said its 2 years old and did duty with semi commercial machine on their back deck on the odd occasion. They sold the machine which was seldom used and the grinder was used no more after that. It is in mint condition. If anyone can make out a model from the stickers go for it. Ive removed the silly tamper from the doser and I'll be trying to make it doserless soon. I'll also be cutting the hopper down, right down as low as I dare

  • go to eurekagrinders dot com dot au as for cutting down the hopper .. dont ... instead .. if you have an aeropress .. use the FUNNEL as a short hopper .. should fit that like a glove. If you don't have an aeropress funnel .. pm me .. I can help ya out.
  • Nice pickup.  Don't make it doserless.  Enjoy grind on demand and using the doser to break up the clumps. At least for a bit, and you can see how good it is to have a doser when a number of people drop by.  Its also less mess so youve actually done your wife a favour getting the new beastie!  :stir :pan I throw a double basket scoop of beans in the hopper at a time only and just grind till they're done.
  • Definitely a step up from the 480  :thumb: You will notice the difference I am sure KK
  • I must admit, I do fancy the doser but always thought they would be a PITA for home use. See what happens. No aeropress 3C but it looks like the sides of the hopper are parallel so it would be a easy mod. Just googled a pic of the funnel - can you get a hexagonal lid  seriously though, wouldn't it be bad to not have a lid on the hopper ? Oh yeah, it has to look frikken smicko too, its bloody huge compared to the 480 but a mini hopper will make it look spot on in proportion and not draw too much attention to itself
  • Woah, that looks in way better condition than the ebay pics had me thinking! Good pickup!
  • I was suprised too, its mint. Pulled the hopper off and cleaned it, reassembled and dialed it in. I'm really close but my beans are little bit old. Huge difference in the cup already. Not sure I rate the doser. A lot of wasted coffee so far. Ive seen a few cafes that have removed the doser, most notable is Hard Coffee in Hastings St @ Noosa ( campos outlet). Must be something in that. On the doser chamber there is a little + and - sign, I assume to increase or decrease the dose. How it works I dont know and the ridiculous Italian gibberish manual is no help
  • I use a spare double basket to dose the grinder then grind. Sweep the chute from inside the doser quickly with a small paint brush and thawack the doser leaver till the doser is empty.  I then say a smug prayer thanking the coffee deitys for my clumpless grinds. I also spare a thought for those with e or d dosers on their grinders what cost 6 times yours did and how they spent all that money and still complain about having to use WDT or WD40 or some such before tamping.  Learn to love the doser... LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!!! :thumb:
  • Having used both styles And although I like both doser & doserless My preference is for the doser KK
  • It still produces the odd clump and throws to the left, sometimes half of a dose misses the basket and goes on the bench.  With technique refinement I'm sure it will improve but first impressions of the doser is its way messier than the 480 ever was  :D

Its all a learning curve I can help with material to make a deflector guide flap or an exit chute KK
  • I've heard that these grinder are very good.  They are big but your quality of grinds will have increased alot over the Sunbeam EM0480, micrometric adjustment etc.  They aren't popular for some reason, but I think they look good, and with a small hopper they will be fine in a kitchen.  I would buy one over a busted worn out RR45 anyday. Didn't Gra buy one of these at some point?
  • I didnt even know eureka did commercial stuff but apparently a lot of it is rebadged as other italian brands ?? Its very quite and looks well made - looking forward to getting it just how I want it, whatever that may be  :D
  • Looking at some piccies I would say that it was sold as a Nuova Simonelli MDX http://www.nuovasimonelliusa.com/grinders.html
  • http://www.home-barista.com/advice/nuova-simonelli-mdx-mazzer-super-jolly-alternative-t14357.html No way would I remove the base, but the short hopper and doserless conversion are interesting
  • derrilex, Na, looks like a Eureka Mondial Coffee Grinder 10 kg or 20 kg.  http://www.maticoffee.com/equipment_eureka.html Actually looking at that site yours seems to have the black doser like the export?  Is that correct? Here's a post of CS about it.  http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1275182035 Attilio posted there and said it's a good grinder, and he knows his stuff. :) Anyway a good grinder.  Have you got it dialed in yet, and what do you think?  Are you still enjoying the coffee (which is the most important bit!!!!)
  • I have had a Eureka Mondial for about 12 months I purchased new they are a great grinder 65mm burrs and very much under rated :thumb: Her are two small hoppers that I come up with a jam funnel and the small hoper is off one of those Aldi cheepie grinders you have to make a reducer to make them fit easy enough thou. ;)  More information here http://www.espressoitalia.com.au Cheers Gra.. • Its got the black doser Lacehim and the neck of the hopper is different, but identical to the nuova. Also its got 60 mm burrs and Gra said his has 65's So far, with very little tampering ( pardon the pun) the coffee is great and vastly improved although fresher beans are needed, but the doser is shitting me no end - time consuming and messy  - its going for sure
  • Eureka Mondial 10kg = 60mm burrs Eureka Mondial 20kg = 65mm burrs Sounds like Gra has the 20. I had a K6 and the doser wasn't an issue.  I did the tape mod on the vanes so that it sweeps cleaner, and I was going to do KKs mod to try and get it to dose in the middle rather than over to one side.  Still they do a great job of breaking up any clumps.
  • KK's mod works as I witnessed  this arvo. Maybe more patients on my part is needed - not what I'm known for. I'm wondering if I should strip it down and clean it - at least get a feel for dismantling >:D
  • So with a idle mind been the devil's playground, I decided to chop the hopper on the eureka. Its some type of acrylic as far as I can tell and its a absolute A Hole to work. I ended up grooving it in the lathe and then cutting it with a hacksaw. The sides are not parallel so I had to fiddle with the lid to get it right. I ended up cutting the recessed bit (where the lid used to sit) off and gluing that inside the lid. Fits perfectly.

Reminds me of some 60's and 70's era space robots - the ones with the big metal body and the little heads.

Did said robot say " Danger Will Robinson danger " KK
  • Nice job D.  Does look like a little robot.  You need to name it now! :)
  • Oh yeah, retro baby :thumb: Its still miles to big in diameter though. Hmmmmmm.
  • On another note, I thought I better pull the top burr out and give it a clean. Pretty good inside and the way the eureka is made is just awesome. The top burr is static and fixed while adjustment is done with the micrometric system ( read move motor up or down using a very, very fine threaded bolt and nut arrangement)  so removing 3 screws for cleaning is as techy as it gets. No resetting or zeroing. However, I am getting the shits on with how much coffee is retained by the eureka. The shoot has no fall and has heaps of holes for the ground coffee to exit the burrs. I am also growing weary of sweeping the chute out with a paint brush. So I was thinking (dangerous I know) of maybe drilling a small hole through the top burr carrier and installing a metal tube ( 3mm ID). Then hooking up some vac line and running it to a puffer. Grind, squeeze the puffer to blow the grinds out of the shoot. Maybe even a small compressor under the bench. In the pics you can see just how many exits there are for the grinds. If I drill a hole where the screw driver tip is, maybe on a slight angle I cant see why it wouldn't work. Oh, the bit of rolled up kitchen paper is blocking the hole where the wires use to go through for the micro switch  :D
  • One handed for the last two also  :D
  • Nice work derrilex! I got one of these off eBay as well. Came with a machine I was after. Other than the cheap plastic bottom it is built thing. Pretty fast for its power and burr size. But the huge hopper and stupid wiring are aimed at the cafe market. Don't know if yours does this but mine turned on and didn't stop until the doser filled. The start switch or moving the doser level six times would restart the motor. One would think if you needed that sort of speed you should get a bigger grinder. I would have a guess that this model would start to burn the coffee. Cleaned up, rewired and now it is a good spare. (The wiring pic is how the grinder was originally wired)
  • Mine didnt auto run. But if turned on it would run until the hopper is full and the little flap triggers the micro switch. I just joined the 2 wires for the micro switch, insulated them and tucked them back down into the chassis and secured them.
