The wand tip connundrum

Now that I'm starting to get my milk technique down pat (just in time to go back to Betsy!) I've got a quick question:

When do you remove the steam tip from the milk?

I've been seeing a few threads about milk suck-back, which is why I always give the wand a good long purge after any milk-heating activities.

But I thought I saw in chat recently a recommendation to remove the steam tip while still blasting - which would for me probably result in milk blown all over the kitchen and a cappuccino head of epic proportions.

So what's the accepted technique?

So the post-removal purge is sufficient?

I spin the steam tap off quickly when temp has been reached and time it so that I quickly remove the wand a fraction of a second after closure. I then grab the cloth and do a quick wipe/purge.
