After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Cleaning Silvia and Rocky

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
Hi Everyone,

This is my first posting.  I have just become the proud owner of a new Rancilio Silvia and Rocky doserless grinder.  It is my first espresso machine and grinder and I need some good advice.

I would really appreciate some help on the best cleaning routine for both machines.  I have had a look on the web for advice (as the instructions in the manual seem extremely light on detail) and was a bit surprised to see that backflushing the Silvia is not recommended by Rancilio and may affect the warranty if done.  Despite this there are several different lists of complex instructions on how to go about backflushing the Silvia if thats what you want to do.

If there are any Silvia owners, and even better retailers that service these machines (and so might have had to fix the consequences of ill advised cleaning methods), out there reading this that can set me on the right path, I would really appreciate it.

Kind regards

Pete

  • Pete Firstly welcome to the forum. As a reseller of espresso equipment including Silvia and Rocky, one of the things that we do before selling the equipment is to take the customer through all aspects of the operation of the equipment (including full demonstration) and most importantly a full demonstration of the cleaning cycle. Many domestic style espresso machines do not come with much information on the cleaning. There are a number of things that I and others could say to answer your questions, however, if you followed that advice and damage your equipment you might void your warranty. I believe that to avoid any warranty concerns or hastles that it may be best to contact the place where your equipment was purchased. If they can't offer this advice then they should not be selling the equipment. John

  • John, FC, Thanks to both of you for your responses.  I value your comments and certainly don't want to do anything that will damage my machine and void the warranty.   While I am not going to name names,  one of the reasons why I asked for advice in this forum is because I was not completely satisfied with product knowledge of the person I spoke to when I bought the Silvia and Rocky (very scetchy on details and some of the information provided turned out to be incorrect), and certainly the demonstration I received was extremely brief and did not include cleaning instructions.   Why did I by from this retailer I hear you ask?  They are an official rancilio retailer, despite a lack of knowledge the salesperson was at least very friendly and tried to be helpful,  they are located close to were I live, the deal I got price wise was I believe fair and reasonable, through doing quite a bit of research on the net I new exactly what I wanted, and I only have discovered that some of the information I recieved from this retailer has proved to be incorrect, after the sale.  For example I asked about getting a blind filter for cleaning the Silvia from this retailer at the time of sale and was told that they didn't have any in stock at the moment.  I was not told the reason that a blind filter didn't come with the machine is that backflushing is not recommended by the manufacturer. So I'm probably a bit concerned that I won't get the best advice on cleaning methods from this retailer if I go back and wanted to at least get a second opinion from some other owners or retailers.  However,  I will go back and try to get some more information from this retailer because it is their responsibility to give it to me.   Wish me luck. Pete
  • Pete Further to private emails, trust you will sort it out good luck john
