Cafe pics from overseas

Hi guys, not sure if this is the right place to start this [other mods feel free to change if so inspired] but thouight it might be interesting to start a place to load photos of interesting international cafe shots.

Zurich and they make sensational coffee, they have been in business a long time

I've been to Zurich. Lovely town. Had a fantastic cheese fondue in an old farmhouse restaurants on the outskirts of the city.

our best coffee in Europe came from Croatia,  90c EURO Just a little shop in Dubrovnik outside the supermarket and bakery with super Cherry strudels Yummy! better than any coffee in Italy or France.

Ok guys the great Paris cafe crawl is now on [although don't know if this should be a seperate thread - mods?]; when in Paris, where else to start but Paris' very first cafe: Cafe Procope (est. 1686); terrible coffee - absolutely undrinkable!

I've been to Procope - lovely sandwiches tho and they sure know how to make a tea!

well, they must be doing something right, if they've been around since 1686! However, whatever it was, it wasn't the coffee - it was either the worst beans in history or the machine hadn't been cleaned since it opened [in 1686!]  :laugh: Here's the inside of a 'new generation' of cafes, primarily owned by young foreigners [in this case an aussie and a frenchman, who had worked in Melb.], called Coutume...

I was there (Coutume) on a recent trip. Very nice coffee, but a little hard to find. On a cold rainy day, we walked from the Eiffel Tower and through a bunch of back streets to find it.  The cakes are nice here too!

Ok here's a place that's had a lot of press recently [got written up in the Age] - called KookaBoora - french for Kookaburra, obviously. Full of antipodeans using their wifi [not common in Parisian cafes] with a bright young kiwi waitress - featured in second pic! A

Cafeotheque, Paris - down on Rue du Hotel de Ville... as far as we can tell [& we've done a lot of walking!], the only place that makes decent coffee in the whole of the 1e arrondissement - the central old part of town, which includes Ile de la Cite and the really touristy areas [including Le Louvre etc].  Run by a Guatamalan lady and her french partner - pretty good coffee, but because it's so busy, their service leaves a bit to be desired!

Ok change of city, change of environment, although a lot of the cafes in Amsterdam are of a similar style to those in Paris...

I know I went to some cafes in Amsterdam 10 years ago but I really can't remember the coffee, the surroundings, the machine or anything really. Great holiday

ok now another extreme - this is an 'old-style Amsterdam cafe from 1670; we didn't actually get to try the coffee here ... it's not about the coffee! A

These guys have just opened in Amsterdam - a 'new breed' of cafes similar to what we're used to, although it's also got a retail space - for an industrial designer using recycled army materials [including real searchlights, etc], called Headfirst... amazing space and very good coffee!

You'll have a great time; there's also a lot of fantastic coffee stuff happening in Amsterdam at the moment. Now back off to Paris for our last couple of days... A PS a couple of final Amst.cafe pics attached - a very new & pretty cool one called Il Momento. It's just opened on the Singel [canal] - note the replica Vittoria Arduino 2-group machine on the bench; a really hot spot... you heard it here first!

Just paid a visit to a cafe in Jakarta called Kopi Lowak, situated in one of the big shopping malls... True to name they offered cat turd coffee at the astonishing price of about $80 a cup!  The waitress proudly showed me the pre-ground all individually packaged into a nice little gold mesh bag. On the menu it said "the most expensive coffee in the world"!! Curious as I was, I opted instead for a Mandheling which actually wasn't too bad, and the price didn't cause any wallet pain. Apologies no pics, but if I end up back there again I'll grab some photos.

I love this thread.. Makes me a little envious but not TOO much  Does Kangaroo island count as overseas??
