Europiccola ebay listing

Cuir_Beluga

Hi all, let me preface this by saying I genuinely am in no way, shape or form contemplating this purchase. I am just trying to understand it.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-2015-LA-PAVONI-ERG-EUROPICCOLA-ESPRESSO-COFFEE-MAKER-MACHINE-/182045399137?hash=item2a62c05861:g:mEoAAOSwoBtW2-0Z

How can this person be selling this machine for this price?
The listing is identical to that of another seller who is selling them out of Italy for a price closer to what you would expect.
There are a lot of alarm bells ringing to me but at the end of the day you have Paypal protection so what could they be getting out of it?

Over to you..........

Surprise, surprise the listing has disappeared. For anyone wanting to chime in it was a Europiccola, brand new, the copper looking finished one. Stock photo, just the one, $489 buy it now, free express courier. First time seller/buyer so 0 feedback. Item was supposedly in Australia.

Could be Stolen... Or it was never legit as in lose your money...

FC it had dodgy written all over from the get go. I just don't understand why when Paypal would side with the buyer and issue a refund anyway. I was just trying to work out what the "seller" would gain from it. Guess we will never know ^-^.

Seems like a scam .. only you never know ... might've been an unwanted wedding/birthday present .. but if that was the case - why $489 .. and not an even $500? Could have been advertised elsewhere and sold .. it would go quickly at that price.

FreshCoffee2

As far as I understand, they gain the "buyers" money. The buyer may well be reimbursed by Pay Pal, but that may well leave pay pal holding the can if the "vendor" listed himself with them by using all fake particulars...Or enough time has passed that the vendor has already withdrawn the cash from the account before paypal can reverse the transaction... I dont know, its just a guess.

It sure is a strange one and there is no trace of it in the sold or completed listings either. The blurb was also identical to another seller, selling from Italy, including the contact email address.

That is true too, if they do a runner and have entered fake details PP will be left footing the bill. I also noted the seller only opened that particular account yesterday.

I reckon you are spot on. The scam is aimed at Paypal. First time Paypalers have to wait 28 days to withdraw but after that the transaction can be capitalised sooner. Desperate folk do desperate things but eBay and PayPal are big companies with a long reach. Nontheless big companies have the facility to write off comparatively small amounts especially if the cost to chase/prosecute is greater than the misappropriated funds. It's you and I who pay for this shortfall in greater fees and transaction costs!

Cuir_Beluga

I never really looked at it being aimed at PP but it does make sense.

Could be someone who knows others that have scammed and gotten away it .. and thought they'd give it a try .. got nervous and pulled the plug.

Dipping their toes in the water so to speak, good point.
