beautiful coffee ! how can you roast like that ! :thumb: post out my earlier roastings , for laughs.

John thank you for sharing your not quite perfect roasts. Thank you also for making posts here. We can share and learn more about coffee (and your roasters) together.

so cool ! how about these curves ? anything it can tell about the CCR-1kg, lame, okay or good ? 😃

The consistency is good, which is VERY important, and there certainly isn't anything wrong with those curves. Sell me one cheap enough and I'll give you more feedback 😛

Hey John, do a 2 for 1 deal - RM and I will come to the party at 1.5K each :stir :thumb:

Waiting with baited breath... The dream for me would be 1kg browns so a 1.2 kg roast or thereabouts.

1.5kg each ? you mean you want me to shell out some for you to buy a roaster ? :-[ the sea frt, customs stuff, agent, all stuff come together would be about $1.2k. so ...

John, we're not arguing that we want you to lose money. We're just poor (or our wives won't let us buy one). They are a great price as is, and if I had the money, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

john0061

;D no worries, nothing matters. no much margin selling this, so you see on ebay just accepting orders, because dont want buy it over then sell, i have no... , my money now being invested on some other areas. 😃 those 2 roasters came from with other cargos in a full container, so frt a bit saved. for such weight machine, if import singlely, about $1200+ fees. long time ago, sold a similar weight machine to Goldcoast, i remember about 1.1k fees, and that machine only invoiced 0.7k. much less than this roaster, means more gst and duty. you from Toowoomba ? impression is, it's a beautiful garden like city, cause saw lots of flowers and greens when driving by. and Please don't say have NO money, maybe just kidding, maybe you're a secret millionaire already, but somehow this kind of feeling will sneak into your subconscious mind, which literally controls your life. if it get info about poor, then it will attract poverty, or the other way around. whatever it gets, it will manifest it. so say to yourself loudly, "i'm a multi-millionaire, you have tons of money..." laster on you ll see the effect in good ways. this is all about coffee machines, but i d like to post out a ebook, historic classic one, " think and grow rich". if you follow it, i believe you can buy off whatever roasters you want. if this is okay, later will post on some other good ones. well, the book exceeds the file limit, instead post another good one, " you were born rich. "

Timbo - sorry for the delay in congratulations on the purchase of your new equipment - finally, it's not an espresso machine or a grinder. Well done mate ! The results from the pics look very good so early on and your roast profile curves have all the right signs of what we would expect to target with drum-type equipment - turning point inside 3 mins, good linear ramp and a tapering finish. My suggestion is to perhaps look for a shorter roast time with similar shape of profile curve by playing around with charge weight, drop temp and your early heat settings (more heat from say 4 - 8 mins. See what difference knocking say 3 - 4 mins off the overall roast time does to the cup character (fruit and brightness). However, don't be blinded by the mythical 15 min benchmark as this can vary from roaster to roaster, etc. Who knows, maybe a shorter time will do nothing for the cup outcome. The hardest part is waiting for bean development (7 - 10 days). Welcome to the club of impatience. What are you doing with your smoke ? are you running it though some fan-assisted makeup air to disperse ? JC

mycuppa

I think the simplest method is to get one of those portable industrial fan blowers (about $200) and run some flexible hose so that the outlet of the roast smoke flows about 2-3 feet away from the inlet of the blower. As it picks up the smoke it will also gather about 80+% free air and mix the smoke with the free air resulting in some excellent disbursement of the concentrated smoke. The solution allows for a mobile operation so you can move it around depending upon the direction of the prevailing wind.

I forgot to also add this type of solution can assist with roaster airflow as it aids the exhaust - I've seen it used on some roasters that have poor inherent airflow design.

Damn, regretting coming over here to have a look at this thread thanks to your poking me on CS's!! I thought I was done with upgraditis and had nowhere to go, but shoot that looks like a damn fine bit of equipment. Gas is not really an option for me so this would be perfect. I like the idea that with next financial years new depreciation rules I could write the whole thing off in one hit too!

john0061

Then that's true I suppose, because the engineer told me that factory manager picked up some scrap metal from those residues, which left behind after making aircraft carriers. So I think that's the reason for hardness. :thumb:

Koffee_Kosmo

That's a very thick piece of front panel metal BF Looks close to 10mm KK

go arduino/tc4. you could even Bluetooth it if you wanted wireless data logging

UNM

if space is tight, the tc4c is good, but I would suggest an arduino mega as the preferred controller if you have physical space. some apps are pushing the memory limit of the arduino and, while tweaking programs to optimize them is an option, a few dollars for the more powerful controller is cost effective. My Mega was $5 more than the base model. oh - there is also the option for the arduino to handle the heater and blower control functions. But that is probably best left until later, given everything currently works.

Tim - I think your charge temp looks ok as you are reaching turning point exceptionally fast for a drum roaster (sub-2 mins). Generally speaking, charge temp has a relationship to the turning point, rather than overall roast duration (although it obviously affects that as well). Lifting it a little may introduce internal scorching of the bean due to the rapid fall/rise. As a guide, I generally use 200 but that's for my gear and it may not work on other types.

mycuppa

Timbo, decafs have a habit of ramping too fast, regardless of the drop temp. Yes, lowering the drop temp will help dampen the ramp, but you need to think of decaf as perhaps a 0.7 of your normal batch. e.g. use around 70 - 80% of the energy Once you work out the metrics or factors for your different origins, varietals and processing type across various batch sizes, the good 'ol 3/4 rule for decaf works a treat ! Many a decaf was ramped too fast - even by the pros :-[

mycuppa

Don't forget that higher airflow on most roasters = faster thermal rise time !

greenman

I have been doing 200-300gram light roasts with good results on my Torrefattore so you should not have any problems doing the smaller batches--happy roasting!!!
