Thanks for the advice Fresh Coffee. ...........Do people think I hould be developing my skills using larger batches then working it back to suit smaller batches once i have dialled in? Or is working on learning the nuances with 2kg loads and smaller fine?...........
You're welcome, and thank you 😉 As an individual I prefer to work out a new roaster at its rated batch size, so if its a 5 kilo batch then that's what I would do (as that is in the end what it is designed to do, so that is where it should be properly efficient). Also if you dont use the rated batch size, you wont know if it is set up properly. An actual example: A couple of years ago I was kind of mentoring a new micro roasting business with advice. He had bought a new roasting machine, but it took ages to roast the full rated batch (a slow cook rather than a roast) and was only efficient if he dropped the batch size down to about 3/4 size. If you dont use full batch sizes, you wont work all that out at the onset, and there is no point having say a 5 kilo machine, that may only roast say 3 kg efficiently, in which case it means there is something wrong with the set up of the machine (note, usually only happens on low end machines). In any case I work out my roasters on full batch size, and then work backwards to convenient sized smaller batches.... However, others opinions may differ, and that's ok. Whatever works for you.
