This is a hard soap with good exfoliating properties.

Ingredients:
52g Sodium Hydroxide crystals (sold as drain cleaner at bunnings)
400g Rice bran oil.
Used coffee grounds (siphon ground best, espresso OK, but a bit fine).
120g Water

The proportion of oil and sodium hydroxide is important. If you use less NaOH, soap will be softer and a bit oily. More and it will likely burn the skin.

Coffee grounds can vary. I used what started is as 14g dry.

Not sure why you find it scary. Read the ingredients of any commercial soap. There is great satisfaction in making things yourself.

I agree, I like making things myself but commercial stuff isn't made in my home with kids hanging around. Either is stuff bought from a market.

If you have to wear safety goggles and rubber gloves my first question was what are the safety issues with handling sodium hydroxide, or lye? What can go wrong that you need safety goggles and rubber gloves. Just a quick google search got me this safety info that wasn't mentioned in your original post. That in my book = scary. Maybe I scare easily. Lye poses serious safety issues. Always use gloves and safety goggles when handling lye, and avoid breathing the fumes. Do not attempt to make cold-process soap without thoroughly researching the technique. Never use aluminum pans or utensils with lye. Lye reacts negatively with wooden utensils. Keep your soap-making supplies separate from your cooking materials. Never use a wooden spoon for cooking after you've exposed it to lye. Yep, I am still disturbed by the scene where that guy makes soap on a pottery wheel and the other fighter sits behind him and there all this lovey dovey action and he turns out to be a ghost but the girl turns out to be a guy and then this cop who hasn't drawn his gun for like years shoots the bad guy. Warning heeded DX... Don't drink soap!

I used to make soap, it's really easy just have to be careful and yeah it smells horrid at that stage, I doubt I'd be allowed to anymore as I've been deemed too clumsy for anything hot or sharp :head:
