After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

La Pavoni Professional

  • I place one hand on the plastic knob on top of the boiler and the other hand on the lever.  This way the machine doesn't tip or slide around.  Only hassle is getting the thing at a comfortable height from the get-go!  Great news that you're getting better shots.  Storming is a joy I've found with these.  Won't be a problem... You'll see. ;)

Day 2 with the Professional. The hundred dollar question is how does the coffee compare to what I produce on the Buzzer .... I reckon the Bezzera is streets ahead
So what are we comparing here in $ terms ... La Pav Pro = $1,200? verses a Bezzera worth $??
    on 1458125142:
...the Pav is certainly way in front of my plunger
Blimey .... In front of a plunger.. lol .. Forgive me ... is that meant to be complimentary? Let me take a stab here ... It's better than a Nescafe too .. yeah?
    on 1458125142:
.....  not surprise they call it the peacock. ;D
Surely that title would go with the Electra MCAL lever. Wonder how your Bezzera would stack up against one of those? I hear they're pretty good?
    on 1458125142:
...but the Bezzera produces a fuller more viscous espresso with much more flavour, I imagine a dose of 18 grams compared with 15 in the Pav has a lot to do with that.
Moons hard earned $ would be on this being a contributing factor as well .. not to mention, being a n00b on the Pav means you most likely haven't extracted the best out of the machine yet .. you have to actually work on it .. rather than a machine like a Bezzera doing some of that work for you .. saving considerable time to get to the God shots.  >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
  • ^ lol .. If that doesn't wind up the ol' fella ... nothing will  :stir
  • Omigosh, shots fired . I'm hoping mine shows today, I don't think it will though. How much do you think the single basket holds DB?

Not sure Sue, its still in the box, doubt I will use it. :)

"Storming" ahhh, steaming, took a while for the penny to drop. :)

I think I am the only one to use a single basket  :(. As a side, mine went through Netley (local mail/parcel sorting centre) this morning. It obviously missed the post today but I should see it tomorrow morning.
  • Gosh ... 2015 smelly old bait not working ...  :'( ....  back to the lab to brew up a fresh batch ..hmm? fish & oyster sauce, International Roast, 2 yr old supermarket beans, hmm .. what's that? .. yep, in she goes ..  :stir .. leaves on shelf for 60 days  :stir ... sniff sniff ... Yikes! ... yep, nice  :thumb: * Not to be taken orally (or seriously  :-[)
  • You forgot the Nescafe Gold Blend for sprinkling on top  :thumb:. I would like to know if Mrs DB is aware of what now graces her kitchen bench top  8).

Given the double is meant to hold 14 grams, I'm guessing the single would be about 7. :)

She sure is, I bought it the day before she left, all is good. ;)

"I think I am the only one to use a single basket" probably. :D So, with a bit of luck tomorrow is the big day. :thumb:

    I figured as much.

I thought it may have been a case of while the cat is away the mouse will play  ^-^.

Think so, a double is to strong for me, Matt manages the naked filter though, I have no idea how. I do hope so. They have had since 8.30 this morning to get it from the airport to Lonsdale so as long as they are on track we should be good.
  • Day 3, bit more tweaking. Seems the ideal dose for my purposes is about 16 grams. Am using 3 day post roast Yirgacheffe, still a bit fresh but very acceptable. Note to self, must try steaming some milk, I'm sure the dog will drink it when it cools. ;D

lol ... When I got my PV Lusso lever and Compak grinder .. after having a string of Gaggia Baby type machines and a $140 De Longhi grinder .. it took me 11 months of experimenting with the grind, dose, tamp, different bean densities, pour time, crema, frothing/microfoam, best milk ... before I reckon I was getting somewhere near reaching the potential of the gear that I had. Being frustrated with not being able to get the result that others were getting whom had years of experience over me .. the temptation in the earlier months was to blame my equipment for not achieving the standard of coffee (latte) that I was after. It took some time to accept that it was solely my teqnique and inexperience that was the problem .. and not my equipment. Fortunately, being on this forum .. there were several experienced Coffee connoisseurs whom chipped in and assisted me with my journey to Coffee Heaven.. as it was a steep learning curve that required a lot of patience, both on my part .. and those helping me.. for which I am most grateful :coffee2:

Oh yes, I'm still at it and still can't get things consistently right, however, I am getting better. When you get that cup you never want to end, then you know you have it right :).
  • A quick report........ It's here, it heats up, the lever is loose- I'm not overly happy about it but hubby says no biggy. He said a gudgeon pin has seized and he is presuming that is why the lever has loosened (because of having to go harder on the lever), it has needed a good clean on the outside. Inside the boiler is as clean as a whistle. Hubby has been pulling it apart and oiling it and what not, he is having fun so who am I to stop him? I guess it is a great way to "learn" the machine a bit too. Over all so far, so good.

Ha, was just about to ask the question, pleased it arrived safely. While your in cleaning mode might be ab idea to remove the basket, spring and spout from the portafilter and give everything a good soak in back flush solution, it all gets pretty grotty in there, mine was spotless externally except for the PF which needed a good clean, a much neglected area of machine maintenance. :)
  • We've done all that DB, they've been soaking in Cafetto. She has cleaned up nicely. I am still annoyed about the loose lever but hubby says "don't sweat the small s**t". Just about to get started again on her after nipping to the shops and having a late lunch.
  • Well, I'm currently sipping on a very, very, very nice cuppa, one of those ones that are so good you never want it to end. I can only imagine how much better it will get as I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. Pulling a shot in complete silence is very strange I have to say  :o. Steaming milk was a doddle  8).
  • Great stuff, pleased to hear its going well. To be honest I've found using the machine very easy, not sure what all of the mystery is about. I suspect having owned and come to terms with a number of other machines has helped, and I reckon understanding the process plays a big part as well. As you say, pulling a shot without the pump rattling away is nice, at this stage even contemplating buying a Bezzera Strega. ::)
  • All those posts and no pics!!!!! Come on people, at least a pic or two would be good and a video wouldn't go astray either!!

I won't get too cocky just yet but so far I haven't found it as hard as I thought it would be. Early days. You're probably right there DB, it would have gone a long way to helping I would imagine. Yep, the silence is lovely, great for first thing early in the morning  :P.

I'll get some piccies in the next couple of days when she has had a good shine and found a permanent home  :coffee2:.
  • Great news CB and what a supportive hubby!!  Kudos to you both!
  • Thanks Brett :). It hasn't all been smooth sailing, I've been playing with grinds and I ended up back to where I started, I got sneezed on and have wasted a fair bit of coffee, well around 4 cups. Onwards and upwards  :P.
  • Ah yes, the dreaded sneeze  Have you been bleeding the "false pressure" was a new concept to me. :-| Pic coming. ;)
  • :D, it sure was a mess to clean up. Oh well, live and learn. I haven't been bleeding off the false pressure, I've read about it but it never occurs to me at the time to do it. 2yx411j.jpg I don't have hubbys photographic prowess so my phone camera will have to suffice for now . Oh and that tamper is on its way it. It is terrible.
  • Not easy to get a decent pic, this will have to do. :)
  • Not sure how important the false pressure thing is? have been doing it each time I use it, easy to do, just open the steam valve, dump steam for a few seconds, wait for pressure to build again and go. Pic looks good, you did a good job with clean up. :)
  • Brilliant folks!  Great pictures of great fun machines!  Many happy shots to you both!!
