Not sure if it qualifies as an espresso machine! Atomic Sorrentina, green bakelite model, rare & mint condition.

The making of an espresso god shot on my Bezzera BZ07 PID. Man, I'm loving this coffee machine.

And another super pour this morning:

25 seconds of ristretto goodness from the Finca Liquidambar roast. Will be doing more of that this week if the weather fines up.

My 2 current coffee producing machines.  Some might scoff at the moka pot but my Italian step-mother, who's family has owned the same house for 600 years, uses one daily   I use mine for the rare times we get power failures, camping and motels without decent coffee.

I posted these pics on my "hello" thread but I thought I'd put some pics here too.

I call this space "cafe domobar" and it aligns nicely with the 'domobar'

The pic of the coffee is a short macchiato with some art - poured in a little bialetti cup (while the coffee gear was in its temp space)

Thank you :).

Thank you GeekKopi, I am sure it will. I am currently having one of the best coffees I have made with a square of Lindt Arabica choccie  ^-^.

Speaking of levers this is what I'm thinking for my commercial coffee bar sometime in the near future.

Having a machine like that would be a great talking point away from the world of push buttons.
Here in Perth, there are no cafes offering levers apart from one in a tourist strip in the CBD, but the coffee coming out of those is rubbish, not due to machinery, but of unsound technique and average beans.
If you,re in lever envy and happen to be around south west Victoria, there,s a cafe in Koroit that has   a commercial lever and shop roasted beans.

My recently-acquired Expobar Office Control alongside my trusty Macap M4D. The Control is my first HX machine after several years with a Breville Barista Express. Purchased it second hand and love the coffee it produces. Built like a tank and not as pretty as the exposed-group machines, but an absolute workhorse from what I've seen so far.

Oh and please excuse the Jarrah beside it. Have to cater for all tastes, and some oldies just prefer the instant stuff

Where are the PID's?  Are they under the drip tray like the Giotto??

Also, is the black significantly cheaper?  The old Domobar Super used to do a black model that was much cheaper.

I'm a stainless guy myself but god the office black might be easier to keep clean.

P.s great pics!!

Ok Simon, I don't know you but you seem like a real fun guy.

Notice anything new ?

You have a collection of questionable tampers....what were you thinking.
You drink takeaway coffee from brands and keep their cups in a worship memorial.....rememberence of how the mighty can fall.
Your significant other is secretly very angry at you for hogging so much of the kitchen space for your coffee shrine. Imagine peeling potatoes hunched over a small sink.......oh what a naughty boy.
You enjoy the distance between the grinder and your machine as it lets you sprinkle grounds that inadvertently spill everywhere thus marking this space as the shrine.
Is there something missing.....did someone say......acacia scales, or should there be a heat shield protecting the grinder hopper from the cooktop elements in summertime ?

Hope you enjoy your new grinder.

Ok Simon, I don't know you but you seem like a real fun guy.

Notice anything new ?

You have a collection of questionable tampers....what were you thinking.

Stop, stop... I have tears!!

I noticed the swanky new grinder Simon.  Kudos!

Now seriously... why all the tampers?

Hahaha hilarious... such a poetic and brilliant post! XD

Alot of it's just stuff I had laying around, just prettied up the area haha. Does look shrine-like huh!

The tampers are as follows: the first is a convex tamper I bought many moons ago, for some unknown reason! Second is one from my old workplace they gave me as a gift. Third is a 58mm tamper. And the one on the mat is a 58.5mm Pullman which I actually use ;).

The takeaway cups I'm not too sure, I just had them, and stacked them!

Haha we do have lots of other bench space around, although I have taken up that whole corner, but my girlfriend is very understanding and supportive of the insanity :)

And I sprinkle it like pixie dust whilst prancing about! XD nah they just fit nicely there, and I like having distance between machine and grinder, don't want any possibility of moisture near the grinder!

And no Acacia, but Hario scales :)

Now that I look back at it, it is quite ridiculous!

And thank you :)

The end :)

Hahaha I quite enjoyed the post too, tampers just tended to build up without warning or announcement of any kind, either that or it's part of a coffee-based juggling act!

And I strongly considered some sort of shield... but when that stove gets a-usin' that tamper goes a-cruisin'!

Sneaky play Simon, love your work.......Oh, and you got us........thinking all along you had noble intent to reduce the shrine and it's just grown larger replete with pot-plant stand, sorry coffee cup holder !

You should write a book or film a UTube on how to "get away with it".

p.s. I see space for a Robur squeezed to the right of the K3.

The 2 models I am looking at are from Auber Instruments. One is the Delux model $149 and the other is the Delux model with steam control for $187.

EDIT: Please refer to site rules

I have done some various searches but I have no yet seen any descriptions on whether it is worth it to get the steam control. The only post I found on another forum seemed to indicate that the steam control isn't a separate PID control (not really sure what is meant by that).

My initial thought is that I would go without the steam control and just watch the temperature indicator to see when the light switched off. I would then know when to start my steam by just beginning a few degrees before the light is set to go off. Thoughts?

The reason I am looking at the Auber is twofold, (1) I like the style of it and how it seems to visually integrate with the machine and (2) is is less costly then others I have seen.

They are closely related. The serial numbers may be adjacent. Made in December 2015.

I have a great funnel, no mess, thanks KK!

No buyers regret. The Robur is just big enough for home use and light at 62 pounds. Seriously it is weird that it works so well and is so easy to live with for home use.

I sold the Kony to someone on CS and he loves it too. The compensation with these grinders is impeccable grind quality and they will last forever....well more or less.

I always worry about having the grinder near the machine, moisture etc, do you guys find this to be an issue at all with your setups? (Water jumping over onto the grinder?) Hence my setup being grinder on one end of the corner bench and the machine on the other haha.. It's probably easy enough to avoid and not really an issue having them side by side.. I see many and have worked in many cafes which have that setup

No.

I’ve never even considered it really. An espresso machine produces some steam but steam rises and dissipates quickly.

The steam wand is on the opposite side from the grinder in my setup but I doubt if it would matter.

Never had an issue
But I do take care and reduce any risk when releasing steam / water
The system I use is to wrap a microfibre cloth over the steam wand and all steam is trapped inside it
And for milk steaming - we’ll im very good at it - so no milk spots

Ah okay fair enough, yeah for steaming but also for any splashback that may occur when purging water, cleaning grouphead etc, but that's great to know. Maybe I'm just messy XD. Am moving houses soon and this situation may arise :o ;)

The cloth over the steam wand method as noted above is great
However I have recommended to others in the past to use an empty 1 Lt milk bottle if space and height permits

Edit
As for group head cleaning and catching over spill I use a stainless steel camping mug
I don’t let any last lever machine flow to spill into the catch stray I catch it in the cup and the odd drop is caught by the blue cloth

That’s why my machine still looks like new

Lol... I know right but I went and had a play with one at the local cafe and it’s too glorious in every respect.  I was going to go all-out and get the electronica but keeping it fresh and efficient would be a challenge at home.  I may yet remove the auto-stop assembly from the Robur for chute-sweeping but at this stage I’m happy to waste a few beans.

Nice score Brett.
You guys have tempted me to consider an upgrade, but I have certain restrictions from the boss ladies.
A new grinder must:
- be as easy to use as the current M4D.
- be doserless. (non-negotiable)
- have minimal grind retention.

I have spent a lot of effort teaching my household to use our current setup. Single dosing with only minute grind adjustments was the easiest concept for all to master, so the new grinder will have to be easy to use.

On the plus side, with so many shops closing down, there might be a unit or two available in the near future.......

I don’t think anything out there is much more fit for purpose than an M4D.  This will need some mods for ideal work in the home but.... I just had to own one.  It’s as simple as that.

Here are a couple of pics of my last couple setup

first the r58 with some custom timber additions, and recently upgraded to a gs3 also with custom timber panels steam lever modification and had it powder coated in black.
Absolutely loving the gs3 and the only other machine i can see myself changing over to in the futere would be a slayer

Grinder is a mazzer Kony E

I love those timber accents, can you please tell me how I can get that done for my Rocket machine?

here's what I've got on my bench at the moment:

La Rocca Verona Expres Single Group, and a Fiorenzato Ducale Two Group, wired with a relay switch to run of 10 or 15 amp !

Both of which I use for my coffee catering, depending upon the size of the job !

Both E61 groups and I'm pretty happy with the quality of coffee they produce, with long, slow, and consistent shots not a problem!

Nice! Wow, I don't think I've ever seen an E61 style two-group machine...really LOVE the look of it...

it's a compact two machine which I use for coffee catering - both machines are relatively unknown, and the la Rocca is actually Spanish and not Italian!

but both make great coffer, which is the main thing !

well i finally finished customising the la marzocco gs3.
Moved away from timber and had some custom billet aluminium pieces made for it.

The coffee machinist machined the side panels and were anodised in electric blue, and specht design made the new group cap, but i didnt like the look of the flat standard ones, so had it made to look like the strada AV group caps.

Portafilter handles are from pesado.

The only other thing i would like to do is change the feet to some taller S/S ones

This one will now be a keeper, as cant see myself wanting or ever needing to upgrade for a long while

cheers guys, am very happy with the results ad the machine is an absolute pleasure to use, and produces a great cup.

My other thought was if it would be possible to incorporate the shot buttons, onto the group head like the strada has, though am thinking the cost and mods involved wouldnt warrant such a mod

Claims to be made by 'Calandra & Co Pty Ltd', 240v 900w, cat no CXE9

Yes, it was marked as working (but with usual warning tag on the power cable that it is not tested).
Doesn't seem to be a true espresso machine. I think it just heats the water up and steam pressure drives water through the head when you open the valve.

Not something I need, but an interesting curiosity

Thanks
It resembles a Bellman coffee maker
But with a portafilter

I just happened to come into that model just two months back (and moved it on since). Was planning to use it as a portable steamer but was too bulky for that purpose.

Both you and KK are right. It's a Bellman-style moka-pot coffee maker, with electric element (~1000 watt) and a thermostat. Interestingly there is also a thermostat-bypass button presumably for extra oomph when steaming.

The advantage I see is that you can make multiple cups of coffee, compared to conventional moka pots where you only get one try. Load the portafilter (takes about 14-15g, 54 mm tamper), open valve, pull a moka-shot, close valve, reload, pull another moka shot, rinse and repeat until the water runs out. The brew temperature can get quite high like a conventional moka pot so no surprise there. Very powerful steamer - almost too powerful.

Given its age, I was surprise it still works and quite well at that. And a nicety is it's made in almost full stainless steel construction (with the only exception in the shower screen which was made from your usual moka pot aluminium/alloy).

Thanks Brett!

Don't think I've added my espresso machine photo to this thread (in fact I haven't posted here for a bit...  :P)

My pride and joy and my daily driver (the lever that is). And no, orange is not my favourite colour (in case you were wondering why it has the same 70s orange as the Calandra above).  Both the machines did come from 70s though!

Love the lever
And I don’t mind orange

My radar tells me that a good number of lever owners are on this thread
