Sumatran Wahana Natural
« on: 27/11/2012, 10:06 PM »
After some discussion about this coffee on chat I approached Brendan at BeanGreen to see if he could source some.

He has managed to get a few bags and expects it to arrive by the end of the week so we should have some available to order shortly after.

It sounds like a great bean and I am excited to get my hands on some!

Here are a couple of links that discuss the bean,

I'm just about to put a big order in to boost up my stash.  Great news.  I'll hold off and wait for these to come in for something interesting to try. :)  Thanks Mr G And Brendan

Okay... Roasted 600g in the KKTO to just on second crack.  For espresso this needs (3days post) a finer grind then even my decaf.  Still have significant headroom in the awesome F5 but wow... I've never been this fine with any bean.  Resulting flat white is very sweet and luscious but I'd say like MM this will need at least another 7+ days.  Thank you Galumay and BeanGreen.   :thumb:

We cupped this today, Trevor (greenman) roasted some up this morning at 6AM, we cupped it at 1pm then brewed it on Jono's new Kone V3.

Cupping, initial dry aroma was a bit cucumber'ish, with a sweet smell to it also. It cupped with notes of watermelon and dark fruits which stayed as it cooled down. It's not as complex as I thought it would be.

We brewed it:

Kone V3 (in a v60 because we didn't have a chemex handy):
45gm grinds
750gm H20
100ml for 45sec bloom
add remaining 650gm over 3m30 period
brew until around 5min drip-through

Really heavy and bold cup. Less watermelon, far more dark fruits. Very nice to drink.

I'll probably be roasting my 1kg up just in to rolling 1st crack and enjoying on filter. Might roast 200gm for spro and see how that goes too :)

Hope others are enjoying this interesting coffee!

As I've stated a few times in other posts.
Coffee needs to develop post roast.

Everyone is entitled to do what they want to..........but personally.......... I really can't see any point at all in tasting something like an exotic Sumatran/Java/Sulawesi/Indo before day 9 or 10 - it's largely a waste of time unless the intention is to track and monitor the daily changes for some sort of experiment.

Particularly with those specific origins, where you start and finish can be completely different with the likelihood of having a few wrong turns and detours thrown in between.
