In terms of feedback,  there are a couple which I thought I'd include whole - they pretty much go to the 'philosophy' of Crema... bottom line is they are quite valid and I certainly am happy that we try and be more accessible to 'newbies' and those who are still in a learning' phase...

thought I'd post them more-or-less verbatim and then make a second post with some thought of my own in a second post [below]; anyway, for a start, here are a couple of the comments:

  • "One of the first questions I asked when I first signed up to Crema was "Am I in the right place, seems very industry focused to me?" I feel the question is still valid, most of the regular posters are working in the coffee industry and have a vast knowledge re all things coffee, this shows in the forum and can be quite intimidating to a newcomer, not suggesting we dumb down posts, however somehow we need to reach the home barista in language that won't overwhelm them."
.
  • "Crema could include a 'tutorial'  or 'webinar'  section (I have avoided using 'masterclass' for obvious reasons!) where from time to time special industry guests post a 3 or 4 min video of something coffee related that we'd all like to see.. Sometimes you can read and practice, but seeing something then trying it at home yourself would make a huge difference. It could even be a sponsor demo-ing a grinder or a machine. I don't want to send people who hold barista courses broke but little bits would do it I reckon. "

Video tutorials are a good idea, they seem to be well received on other forums, i.e. Coffeegeek and Coffee Snobs, particularly those relating to Coffee art and how to's, as in maintenance, pulling shots, steaming milk etc. ;D

KK a good milk how to video would be great where you can actually see what's happening in the jug.

Personally I would like to see a Wiki style info place where some of the jargon and most common techiques can be posted and not lost in the forum.  Stickies are good but sometimes you have to read 4-5 pages just go get all the info.

Also all newbies are welcome.  We were all one once, and to be honest I really enjoy passing on the knowledge that I've gained over the past few years, and I'm still learning too which is great and this forum makes it much more enjoyable.

Did you ever see Pete Postlethwaite? Not all film stars have film start looks.

I will second the milk texturing video.  KK,if you are worried about movie star good looks then don't be. AM and I can be on hand to rub Vaseline on the lens and ensure that the Director, the Cinematographer and the Camera man do Nigella-esque cut-aways.

Surely you aren't suggesting that KK wear a low neckline top to expose plenty of cleavage. I've never met KK but I'm pretty sure that he doesn't have the same <ahem> assets as Nigella

LOL can someone give me a job so I can be one of the 'in' people :)

I haven't found it intimidating but maybe that is more about who I am compared to other newbies and I try and help out everyone I can :)

Oh aren't you sweet AM  :-*

...back on topic :) videos are a fantastic idea, I think majority of people are visual people and would learn a lot more from videos than trying to decipher what it means to go from words to action for what they need to try.

On the coffee side of things, David Schomer made some Barista training video's (Latte Art) I've watched - and that man looked like he's got a bad 70's porno moustache. Doesn't mean I didn't learn a lot from the videos.
