Quite an interesting one from the Age: http://www.theage.com.au/lifestyle/diet-and-fitness/why-the-worst-time-to-drink-coffee-is-actually-in-the-morning-20150601-gheita.html

I guess it depends on your motivation for drinking coffee; thoughts?

I'm the same, I pull my shots with my eyes half closed in the morning.

It's a ritual.

In the news over the last few months there has been a lot of focus on coffee.

A few months back I read that 5 cups is good. Last week it was reported that anything more than 4 cups is bad for you.

I wonder if this news was based on a peer reviewed and published article in a medical journal. Probably not.

Here is a good article on coffee self regulation: http://harvardmagazine.com/2015/03/self-regulating-coffee-drinkers

The article assumes that drinking coffee for the caffeine uptake is the main reason folks drink coffee - which is mostly true

But as GK has said it is part of a morning ritual - and as much as I feel like I need caffeine to function at optimal levels most days, I do find myself craving the flavour profile of a well made coffee (mostly my own but occasionally others get it right as well !)

Besides even if cortisol uptake is compromised by coffee consumption in the morning, so what ?

I'm still going to drink it anyway !

For me the article is mute.  My body now makes no cortisol.  As a result my sleep patterns are interesting and my natural hypotension in the mornings before my cortisone kicks in means that a coffee often helps get me on an even keel.  I nonetheless found it interesting!

I needed something from the local shopping centre this morning and was desperate for a coffee at the same time -  but try as I might I couldn't not find any outlet worthy of my coffee affection, and without the rush of caffeine to inform my purchase decision, I went home empty handed...

Oh well,.as least I can make my own coffee at home !

Havent read the artikill but heres my take on the topic subject.

There are 2 reasons to drink coffee:
a) psychological addiction and
b) caffeine addiction.

The 3rd reason (*you like coffee*) is a given.

That you might drink it in the morning, or at lunchtime, or in the evening is irelevant, although my line of thinking is you drink it when your psychological addiction tells you to do so....which I think is in the morning.

Its all quite legit. When I travel, I seek out a cuppa in the morning for genuine "medicinal purposes" ie.....to feed the caffeine montser, and circumvent the real probability of the caffeine withdrawal headache. I only need one, in the morning, and can go the rest of the day well without.  The quality of the coffee doesnt matter (I am traveling, I have no idea what the coffee will cup like beforehand, and just have to take the plunge), its the small injection of caffeine that counts.

Dont let the phrase "feed the caffeine monster" give you the wrong idea.  You DONT need to be a BG COFFEE DRINKER to develop the requirement for a daily caffeine injection... as little as a regular two cups a day will get you a noticeable caffeine withdrawal headache if you go without for a couple of days...

Slow news day ?
