After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

KKTO Home Build

KK suggested I start a thread of my DIY KKTO build.

Today I won my bid for a set of pots on eBay, so the first major hurdle is covered for just $30.

So next I'm popping up to Homart later today to pick up a TO for $40.

All that remains:
[li]motor[/li] [li]driveshaft, 12v power supply and fabricate an agitator[/li] [li]Build a base[/li] [li]Silicone tubing for the top of the pots to create a seal for the TO[/li] [li]Fire blanket for insulation[/li] [li]Need to find a cheap/free vacuum, food-grade bucket, cheap sieve and extra tubing to build a cooler.[/li] [li]USB Multimeter - this will be the last on the list[/li] [li]Cheap oven mits and scales[/li]

I've got a desk sitting in the garage and an old PC that I can use for roast monitoring. But the USB Multimeter will have to wait - I'll just go by MKI eyeballs & ears until I can afford the multimeter. I'm probably not quite ready to get into roast profiling just yet anyway.

The pots I'll pick up during the week (Unless anyone is going to be near Samsonvale or Keperra and can pick 'em up for me. I should be in Brisvegas to deal with the Bezzera Pressure Gauge issue later this week anyway.) but the build will start approximately mid December when my clients start to go on holidays.

Looking forward to this project!!

  • Barazi stock all the KKTO parts I suggest that you at least get the parts that make the DIY job easier and the end result better At the very least you should get 1) Liner insert to give you the correct overall volume 2) High temp pre cut Silicone hose KK

I can vouch for the silicone hose. Before this I used a silicone cake tin with the bottom cut out $5.  It was not as good a fit as the hose.  You haven't seen mine in action so I can only try to describe the smoke... Think a 2burner BBQ with sausages (comments from others).  Indoors absolutely not.  On our Deck is a no also (smoke alarms).  You're in Caloundra so Bunnings, a big extension and roast on the Beech!  ;). $30 for the pot is unbelievable!

Kelsey, I've got a 240V fan you can have, it has a plug already.  You can just use a cardboard box to start!  I used the one that KK gave me when I bought the KKTO, and I only just stopped using it!  ^-^  Also just use the bit of your pasta pot (was front right on the photo) for your sieve.  Works a treat on mine.  I just use the kitchen scales, and old wooden spoon for the cooling.  Oh, and start saving your coffee bags with the one way valve.  You can reuse them. :) KK, re the pot liner, what's the dimensions of that?  I was just thinking that Kelsey is using a pot that's different to yours, maybe it won't fit.  I suppose he could just the pot down to Bezzera and check it.
  • Thanks KK (and BH) I was definitely considering the hose as one of the items. Do you think the insulating liner (that's what you mean, right?) will fit the pot set that I bought? $30 for the pots was a steal! That's the main reason I decided to go down this route - I whimsically punched 'pasta pot' into eBay the other night and couldn't believe it when there was one in QLD going so cheap. Lacehim, that's fantastic, thank you! I'll actually be going to Bezzera when I pick up the pots, so that's entirely possible. If it's possible, I mean. You think they'd mind KK?

The insulating liner will fit a 24cm pot Extra depth (if any) does not matter as it sits 10mm under the pot rim - thus giving you the correct volume automatically

They wont mind Kelsey Just take it in with you  KK
  • Thanks Paul, that's great info. They've got the insulating liners there for sale?

KK: the champion of the DIY home roaster!  Many of us would still be in poppers and burning down the BBQ without you mate!
  • We sure would BH and the patio would be covered in chaff!  Kelsey, and great thing about the KKTO is that you can build it yourself, or get a few parts from KK and use second hand stuff for the rest, or if you can't be bothered, get the whole thing from KK ready to roast. KK has covered all the bases, and it will pay for itself pretty quickly. :) I like it because it's safer with kids about, yes it can still be hot, but in my opinion it's safer with a TO, than roasting with a heatgun.
  • Well I'm hoping to pick up the pots this week and if I can I'll bring them to Bezzera so I can see if the liner insert fits. Hopefully next week we'll be able to start the build.
  • I am in the sharing business An idea shared is in its own way a betterment of the human mind One day (when I die) someone will set up a wiki page on my design Kelsey - post or PM me on the day of your visit If I am available I will come to Barazi  for a face to face  KK
  • Do you *want* them to wait until you die, or is that just an assumption? ;)
  • And I will - get in touch, that is.
  • WHAT???? There isn't a Wiki page already!!!!  We should get it done now (If only I knew how).

I am not net savvy enough for it myself Must be easy enough

I would prefer to be alive  ;D KK
  • The great thing about wiki's is that they're all about collaboration. Were you thinking one on your own site or getting it up on Wikipedia?

The aim is to have a platform for people to have access to the plans or build process KK
  • In that case it'd probably be more suitable on your site than elsewhere. koffeekosmo.com.au site looks to be hosted at GoDaddy (could be wrong, but it seems that way). Depending on your hosting package I could setup a wiki on there for you fairly easily. It also looks like Chris at Bezzera controls it for the most part, so maybe that isn't best place for it? If someone wanted to purchase a suitable domain 'kktowiki.com', for example, I'd be happy to host it and setup the wiki.
  • It's likely that it would be removed by Wikipedia - they're explicit about it not being about guides, instructions, how-tos, etc. I can start a page that details the existence of the KKTO, its history and purpose - but not provide instructions or information on how to actually build one. But if we start our own we can put whatever content we like on it.
  • Paul (and anyone else in the neighborhood) I'm aiming to be at Bezzera around 2pm tomorrow (Wednesday). Hope to see you there!

I think I can make that See you there KK
  • Great, looking forward to it.
  • Sounds like a plan - I'll give you a yell if I'll be able to drop by. :D
  • Pffft!  I'll be in class.... Phooey!  Well luckily possibly because every time I visit Chris I am tempted far too much.  Don't get me wrong, I love Mr Unico Splendor but that dual gauge Galetea makes me weak at the knees and the Stratega... Why didn't I buy one on special... WHY... oh that's right. I'm a responsible husband and father now... Time for a reward surely???
  • I'll be popping back around 4.30 to pick it up...
  • Thanks for catching up with me today Paul, I really enjoyed our little impromptu meeting! So, I've got pretty much all the bits now. I'll take a photo in a day or so. Going to try and catch up with Lacehim sometime in the next week to start the actual build process. :coffee2:

Likewise mate Glad you got your machine fixed while you waited and got home safe We sat like old men talking or shooting the breeze and solved some of the worlds problems KK
  • I was very sad to miss it!
