According to Tea & Coffee (a US industry mag.) Feb 20 issue, flavoured coffee is a 'dynamic field that's appealing to more consumers than ever before.

How prevalent is flavoured coffee in Australia (outside of Starchucks) and does anyone have an opinion as to its growth rate here?

i suppose with the price of coffee beans going up many chain stores will promote the use of flavours to mask a very bitter cheap blend of beans

Admin, Honestly I think it is a non issue in Oz. AusRs, If "chain stores" promote flavoured coffee it is because they believe there there's a buck in it (in addition to the fact, however misguided, that they appear to model themselves on the american system where all manner of flavoured coffee beverages are everywhere even though they are complete crap). The accepted "industry" logic is that flavoured coffee (be it flavoured beans or coffee flavour syrups) builds market by getting newcomers (those who havent previously tried coffee) to try coffee based drinks. The easiest way to do this is to mask the real flavour of coffee (an acquired taste) by adding a flavouring, which also happens to be sweet. The newcomer is therefore more likely to try coffee where in a world without a sweet flavouring, they would not. "Bitter" coffee is most usually the responsibility of the improperly trained person that brewed the coffee, rather than the result of using cheaper types of beans. Many large coffee companies have been using "cheap" beans for years, so I wouldn't necessarily expect any drop in relative bean/blend quality as a result of rising prices. Regardz, FC.

I agree, not a major problem in Aus. You have a market hooked on sugar and a market discovering the world of coffee tastes. Fortunately we have an Italian influence to balance the opinion of the coffee drinker(no I'm not italian!) Being an optimist I am hopeful that a widescale increase in the quality of coffee making, will mean the tastes in Australia will turn torwards the wonders of the espresso and its tastes. Tell a flavoured coffee drinker there is chocolate or caramel tastes in an espresso. A good laugh at least to see the reaction!

Having lived in america and travelled italy many times I also find real coffee drinkers regard flavour as rubbish. Italians, spanish.. dont look at it. Young americans get it at starbucks,  but as others here say,              its just flavoured sweetened crap, that hides the taste of the coffee. the only reason certain places push it is because its very profitable,   and yes..........it draws young ones into coffee who normally wouldnt try it. I have never run into anyone ever, who would even try it,    i read the side of the bottle once in a coffee chain and it didnt sound too good.   flavours, sugars, colours, preserves,  and things with numbers after them, ie  161, 132, etc etc.... chocolate flavoured coffee, strawberry, caramel.       sounds like a milkshake. i worked next to starbucks in new york, and the staff where i worked also used to comment when i was there was that it was rubbish. mind you they still think drip coffee is great, and dont drink tea. A friend who managed a gloria jeans chain said they stocked it but never sold it.  Maybe depends on the area. His in inner city melbourne.   cheers

We have a local Gloria Crap near us. They really push the flavoured coffee by having an urn burning away for free taste tests. I tried a hazlenut flavoured whatever and to be honest, there was no taste of the underlying coffee - it tasted like hot hazlenut syrup. Yuk, yuk, yuk.......
