After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Obscure or offbeat coffee drinks you have had/made or heard about.

Chatting a little on Twitter this morning about a "Latte Macchiato" I made one for a customer once (think he was testing me or trying to wind me up) and hadn't ever made or drank one myself.

Steam milk first and pour into a glass then pour the shots on top. Normally with a spouted PF the shot leaves no mark on the top and the holes close over leaving a white top.

Anyone else got any strange ones out there?

    I made Kopi Tiam at home when my wife decided that she wanted a sweet brew. I find that plunged coffee works best for this. I've also enjoyed the Vietnamese Coffee from a cup set my wife purchased for me in a market in Hoi An.

    I get these wierd lattes at one place that the Mums like to hang out after school.  You get a tall glass of steam milk with about 4cm of foam on top, and a tiny stainless steel jug of espresso to pour in yourself.  It's like a DIY latte.  I suppose it gets rid of the 1/4 or 1/2 strength folk.  It's more the foam that annoys me. Some folk just don't know a thing about coffee and just bluff their way though I think.  Like ordering a flat white with extra foam, and they you see them toddling back to complain because there's no choc on top!  ;D  Or ordering a long black, then asking for milk!  ::) I don't work behind a machine, these are just my observations as a customer in the queue.  I think I would probably lose the plot a few times a day if I was behind a machine. :) Mind you I ask the wife to order me a double ristretto latte and she won't try to order it because she thinks I'm having a lend of her!  :D

    This thread has reminded me of a drink I used to have before I really liked coffee. My local place calls it an "Angels addiction". It's essentially a double shot of coffee, chocolate sauce, cream, sprinkles, cinnamon and a heap of condensed milk in the bottom. I would have it without sugar...you know, for my health.

    of course, when in Asia (& in certain parts of rural nsw), there's always the espresso made with instant coffee - delicious dR ::)

    That reminds me in Malaysia I saw a few green coffee espressos....didn't try one but it smelled like described...

    We have had a running joke at work about me going to an ex-co-workers'-girlfriends cafe and ordering a a coffee something really silly, like half shot expresso with hot skinny milk and a dash of soy, topped with full shot decaf espresso... you get the drift and all done with complete seriousness. I've been known to take the piss and fortunatley or unfortunatley i never got around to the above, but perhaps will one day.

    Finally a gaming room where the modus operandi is reflected in the beverages... Step right up, everyone's a looser! OMG... The horror!  Perhaps the coffee is meant to be a deterrent to problem gamblers... not so good for problem sinkers however!

    Went for a little 70km ride today and finished up having lunch in a place best described as a Coffee Wasteland. Today's cafe for lunch was still using a Haros Boiler/steamer and using instunt spooned from the jar for the "coffee" base. They only thing that saved it from being a totally 1970's Goldenfleece Crapochino was the thermometer in the jug. Still didn't and won't be taste testing one  :P

    Had a vietnamese coffee made for me at Nest (formerly Chic) one morning by the girls there. They used the proper vietnamese coffee maker, and I got to try it both cold style and hot. Would be sensational with the right bean, especially cold style on a hot summers arvo up here. I think a very strong, slightly sweet bean would work best for me.

    I make one of these for SWMBO every morning, steam the milk in the mug and pull the shot on top, saves a bit of mess and washing up. In the evening things become a touch more civilised and things are done a little more formally. ;D

    If you are making it cold Vietnamese style, the bean wouldn't need any sweetness. The gobs of condensed milk will provide more sweetness than most require. I must dig out my little vietnamese filter and try a few variations. Oh also, if anyone else wants one of these filters, they are really cheap near me and I'd be happy to pick one up. Don't know current price, but mine was no more than $5.
