After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

what home roast are you enjoying right now?

  • Just opened a bag of Jeff's Harrar very very nice thanks again Jeff. :) This is another favorate to add to my list. Cheers Gra..
  • roasted some Sulawesi Rante Kapua Torajah today - and I'm very happy with the results - its been a while but from memory this bean enjoys ten days plus post roast - in any event I'll be serving it as a filter coffee in my cafe and probably drinking it the same way at home!
  • enjoying Sumatran Gayo Specialty Organic from Beangreen--lightly roasted to RFC--brewed in Clever Dripper 20g to 300g water for 3mins--hints of citrus and fruit, creamy mouthfeel, very juicy and it just gets better the more it cools :) :D
  • I've been enjoying my first roast with the KKTO, the Nicaraguan Matagalpa taken just to 2nd crack for a couple of days now. Originally thought it was too light a roast but now I am not so sure... really liking it  :)
  • Just had my first cup of Ethiopian Blue Horse Harar that I roasted on Saturday evening.  :) I'm pretty impressed with the flavour of these little beauties.  :coffee2:

This sounds fantastic.  What differences in the cup do you get when comparing the Clever and a plunger?  Doesn't have to pertain to just this bean.  I'm still yet to buy the Clever because I imagine there is very little difference between a well brewed punger and these other immersion/steeped methods.
  • nailed a roast of some Loas Dong Hau Sau the other night, and have been drinking it as a filter coffee at work, and as an espresso base at home - and its flippin delicious on both counts with pear and walnut aromas on a peach and plum palate!
  • i'm still playing with the famous KJM blend . actually i ordered some more greens yesterday 7.5 kg of  peru de selva from the other forum green sales place and from bean green yesterday i ordered .. Brazil Daterra Estate  - Sweet Collection Costa Rica Las Pavas Lot No. 3 Bali Shinzan God Mountain all to go with the dselva in the blend i ordered it to be on the safe side and get me through all the up coming holiday period when places close down and and post slows down and so on . johno
  • Hi Texx.  That's  good blend and if it aint broke, why fix it.  Very sound thinking... especially if you have customers to satisfy.  I have it on good authority (one of the major roasting houses in BrisVegas) that Brendan from BeanGreen is a great guy to know for low bean stock emergencies.  Just keep pop over to http://www.beangreen.com.au/contact.php and type Low Caffein Emergency.... I bet you'll be amazed at what he can supply and when.  From memory the Gotham City Bat Bean signal is responded to by AM  I am ENJOYING Tango's Yemen blend (Bag B) as a double piccolo latte.  Very yum!
  • Roasted Ministry Grounds House Blend during last week, and am enjoying both espressos and flat whites from this blend. Though the beans when green look a bit ugly, they roasted nicely and evenly. Nice well balanced cup. Smell from the grinder is wonderful. Lingering finish.  ^-^ Anyone tried this? Gary at G
  • Dominican cibao altura de constanza from bean green, simple roast, pulled at first snaps of second crack. This works really well for me as espresso, not so taken with it in the aeropress. very strong malt flavour that lingers long after finishing the cup. Seems to have almost no acidity. For those that usually use milk/sugar this could be an interesting one  to try without. In the aeropress, I find there is a peppery taste that overpowers/conflicts with the maltiness. Much as I an enjoying this, I feel something is lacking and would welcome any tips on changing roast profile to get the best from this bean.

To be honest, some DomRep's are a bit of an enigma for me. We have used Barahona (FTO) with mixed success (well, the word success if probably drawing a long bow) and I've often considered it to be a 1 dimensional coffee and struggled to really find the ideal sweet spot for how to use this bean. Having tried a few different approaches with the roast profile, yes there are cocoa and malt notes, but acid has been difficult for me personally to control. It has worked OK (just OK) in blends, but as a SO....mmmm......not my cup of tea or coffee. I have no direct experience with the bean you are using UNM, so would hate to take a negative view on your bean or rain on the parade of all DR's but for me personally, I prefer to look elsewhere until I come across a DR that will excite me. A large Vic roaster uses DR in some of their blends. Horses for courses.
  • Tell you what UNM just for you LOL when I feel a little better, I'll roast some up and let you know what my findings are, I use both the same things as well, espresso and aeropress :)
  • I am a happy man today. After a weeks holiday with no access to my own espresso, finally got time to clean my machine last night and set the timer for morning coffee. Started the day with a double shot of Honduras Finca el Filo Cup of Excellence 2010.  Roasted on 6th jan and left to rest while on holiday.  A lucky guess with grinder setting gave me a near perfect extraction. The flavours are so well balanced it is hard to pick out anything that dominates. Just a really nice smooth  and full bodied shot with a hint of acidity. Followed this up with a second double 'cos the first was sooo good! I've attached a photo of the beans. Did take a photo of the second extraction, but too dark.
