Steam knob - finally

Today I was tired enough to be incapable of working effectively, so it gave me a chance to get the steam knob off, as prompted by AM.

I'm not entirely certain how to measure a thread, but from edge to edge at the widest point of the thread, it looks to be 8mm on the nose.

The depth of the screw appeared to be 18mm. It looked straight by eye, but these photos have me doubting that!

These were a perfect fit. Lefty is the steam knob bolt. I know it looks narrower, but it screwed with little resistance all the way to the hilt. The M8 nut also worked on the steam knob bolt. Sidenote - I clearly have no idea how bolts are measured. The Bakelite (?) knob itself is 40mm long, 25mm diameter at the widest, 19mm at its narrowest.

Hi AM, more that this is so foreign to me that I don't even know where to start! On the other hand I'm great at getting my clients setup and running smoothly - it's all about context. As soon as I return I'll grab some extra shots. As a sidenote I now understand why calipers are useful tools!

I had a lot of help with the roaster. When we move to a house, I plan to devote a large chunk of the garage to second hand tools picked up on eBay. I'm frustrated with having to buy everything and that it's all cheap junk. I've got plans in my head for a few things and I'm keen to build them. If I don't accidentally cut off my own arm in the process, that is.

My local hardware store had the attached in stock, but not in 8mm. He's seeing if they can get them in.

All the M8 bolts fit perfectly, checking online it looks mike M8 is 1.25, so it should be good. Pity about the t nuts, I did wonder that - thought it might compromise the aesthetic.

Photos! I fruiting LOVE this knob. (steam knob, that is!) Mark, thank you! Even traumatizing a favored sister in law is worth this.

The finish is quite different. The knob is a satin/matte finish compared to the gloss of the PF. I actually prefer the knob's finish, really classy. If more pics are required just let me know!

Not sure what finish I truly like, but many have commented that the lacquer is better for an item with lots of use/abuse... I think the school is still out re PF handles but the shiny gloss does seem to attract more users...

I personally still like the one you did for me that I did in a soak in decking oil, followed by orange oil (to get a better smell). I haven't had to recoat since I got it, as the oil from my hands seems to be doing a great job. Looks like the day I got it.

I clean mine before I take photos. I clean mine thoroughly once a week though to spotless.
