After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Brevilles new baby - the infuser BES840

Would love to see a side by side comparison of this and the new ZPM  espresso machine when they both hit the streets.
The ZPM is the new crowd funded machine recently on kickstarter.

Phil, care to make any comments on how this compares? The ZPM currently seems to be the one to beat, based on pre release info.

  • Thermo-coil sounds new and interesting.  The machine looks like a mid-range killer.  Time will tell but the success of the BDB900 augers well for this offering.
  • I brought it up last year  ;) Anyone remember the Ellen show when I thought she was giving away a BES900 It was this model ? They look very similar its the BES 830xl  - http://www.brevilleusa.com/beverages/espresso/die-cast-programmable-espresso-machine-bes830xl.html So folks you heard it here first last year KK
  • Great eyes KK, I do remember that conversation and wondered what it was.  I wonder what changes have happened to that model to make it an BES840 here?

Probably nothing except the US model is 110V & the Au model 240V
  • Just added model number to the thread title. Should make it more search engine friendly.

Errr yeah, no, it was not a BES840 that was given away on Ellen, but this machine will replace the BES830XL in the US and replace the BES820 in Aus. Cheers, Phil

I wish all those involved in the ZPM project the best of luck. Couple of things seem a little strange & perhaps highlight their lack of espresso machine experience. They started out with a 1000W rated element that only effectively delivered 800W & have now upgraded to a 1200W element. FWIW the BES840 uses a 1700W thermo-coil. When you look at their renderings, the display shows 95deg. Got to say I haven't tasted too many, if any espresso that tastes good at 95deg....... Cheers, Phil
  • Interesting and thought.provoking comments phil. Displayed temp can be completely different to shot temp and is easy enough to change, but this is what they choose to show on the mock up  and obviously rings alarm bells with  some. The thermo-coil/thermo-block thing is interesting. Research on the internet suggests the terms are often used interchangeably (the diversity and questionable accuracy of internet sites strikes again). It is quite clear you/Breville see them as different things. Can you tell us anything about how the thermo-coil is implemented  in the 840 and what the advantages are relative to a thermo-block? I am not sure how much a lack of espresso machine experience would hinder their design efforts. With open source, they can call on a vast store of knowledge. A completely fresh perspective can also sometimes lead to real innovation. Only time will tell.

I've never heard of this project until today, but from what I read a 240v machine seems unlikely in the near future.  :(  They are concentrating on the US market 110v system.  A nice little machine though by the looks of it, and has many features that people are looking for in a small cheap machine.  :thumb:  Good luck to them.  Its nice to see a breath of fresh air in the lower end espresso machine market.  I like the idea of being able to use parts off the shelf rather than custom parts that might not be available in a few years time.

Bigger isn't always better Phil, Stick a V8 in a mini and it will fly but it's totally impractical and won't do corners (and yes someone actually did this!).  If they have designed it right for the size of their thermoblock then I'm sure it will work.

It does, but its also a PID, so that can be varied.  I'm not really sure it matters, it's up the customer to choose what they like, that's the idea behind a PID is it not? So how is this BES840 going to revolutionise the world of espresso?  No specs as of yet?  Release date?  Please don't dribble them out like the BDB,  :stir list the specs and then maybe we can have a discussion about it.  ;D
  • I've had Breville shares on my watchlst since last year and wish I had have bought then.  This latest release and their Half Yearly report pretty much confirm this.  Nice one Breville... Go Aussie!  :thumb:
