After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

What Coffee are you roasting this week

Ummmm where did you get those little treasures from???  MMmmmmmmmmmmm
  • I had to roast today before I ran out of my SO, so I roasted 30% Java Ijen Sundried, 30% Costa Rica Herbazu Estate, 20% PNG Wahgi AA, 20% Brazil Daterea Estate Sweet Collection.  A bit of an experiment using the Costa Rica bean, but I've ran out of Indian and didn't fancy MM again (takes 10+ Days to settle for my lusso). I pre-warmed my KKTO at 125C, used 600gm green and hit 1C at 15mins, let that roll into RFC burped and hi SC and pulled just on the first snaps at 21mins.  Nice roast, and 520gm roasted. :) The CofE El Salvador Lot 29 Las Nicolas hasn't lasted long, it's very nice even in milk.  Must try a long black with it when my sniffly nose goes away.
  • 230g Honduras 250g PNG Bannum Wo 250g Columbian Excelso 250g Malawi Nyika 200g Decaf Plan on doing up a batch or two of Harfusa - one for cold processed, one for plunger Might roast up some Robusta too. Also need to finish off some Yirg Special prep. Busy week for the little hottop
  • Did 1kg of Sulawesi/Ethiopian Guna Limu last night. Was an emergency roast...is tasting great today despite the stupid amounts of crema.
  • Just did a 600g blend of Brazil natural low caf (400g) and columbian water processed decaf (200g). Pulled on the first snaps of second crack at 18 mins, slightly light than previously. Pretty happy with the result.
  • Today it was time to visit Africa (in my minds eye) once again Roasting on the KKTO this evening 750 grams of Ethiopian Harrar KK
  • well so much for the honduras el filo . i roasted 500grm last saturday and i just went to make a cup and the small grinder is empty and so is the bag. i was told it reaches its best at about 2 weeks post roast there in we have have a problem , it just dont last that long ( 6 days ). looks like i have to go to the bean green web site some time very soon and do some shoping . johno
  • Been a busy last 24hrs on the Behmor, 4 by 300g batches: Espresso Blend: 50:30:20 Brazil,Sumatran,Ethiopian  took 15sec into 2nd crack Yemen Sanani Mocca SO: Pulled at 5sec into 2nd crack Columbia Supremo SO : Pulled at start of 2nd crack Costa Rica Herbazu Estate SO: Pulled 15sec into 2nd crack Currently drinking:  PNG Wahgi AA and Eth Sidamo at home with a bit of post blend with these two.                             Tanzania Uru and El Salvador El Finca Carmen at work. Think I need to settle down  ::)
  • Just finished 2 roasts on the KKTO 800 grams of Peru Ceja De Selva Estate 800 grams of Brazil Datera Bourbon Mocha  Some of this roast will be gifted as thanks to people that have assisted me KK
  • Just about to roast 250g of some Sumatra Mandehling and 250g of Yirg. Tomorrow I'll roast up some of my Ray's Selection MTC for something a little different. The Costa Rica Tarrazu that I roasted last week seems to be hitting a nicew spot around the 6-8 day mark, losing a little of the earlier levels of acidity that I found unpleasant. Gotta love the variables of SO espresso!! :coffee2:
  • Just did the last batch of my Kenyan/PNG/DR/MM blend that I've enjoyed so much these last couple of months. I took it just a little lighter this time as I've become aware of a taste that might be characterised as 'ashy', so thought I'd try pulling it faster and try for a medium roast. Oddly, however, the roast itself progressed much faster than usual, even though the night is cooler than is typical. It seems fractionally light, but we'll see.
  • In addition to the 20+ usual suspects on the regular list this week, we have a few new starters being road tested. BRAZIL FAZENDA LAMBARI
  • Nice one Jeff!  The furry Tounge syndrome only becomes a problem if you start having to shave it regularly.  Yesterday while baby wrangling I roasted a 1kg blend of PNG Robusta/Mex Finca/PNG Kimmel/Sumatran Blue Batek (10/25/35/30) Medium+ in the KKTO.  Smells great this morning but it's for my holidays end of next week.  This week I am drinking the last of the Tiger Mt as a single origin and I've also roasted one Costa Rica Tarrazu although reading Ash's comment perhaps this should age also.  Gosh I'd love o buy some more Tiger Mt beans (subtle hint... subtle like MM or AM for that matter )

The Costa Rican should'nt need too much rest, but that depends upon how it was roasted and how fresh the greens were (fresher = longer rest). Tiger is on the radar for May/June. We are contemplating another 5+ tons of it. At the moment though, we have a Guatemalan that runs rings around it, but alas it's likely to be short-lived. New crop Indians should start landing in late April, so we will have a bake-off between the Elk Hill and the Tiger Mountain again. I've forwarded a few ton of the new, untested Elk Hill on the basis it's just been so damn good and last year the Elk clearly beat the Tiger. Unlike the laws of nature.
  • Second time roasting MM.  Took 400g on the Behmor using 1IbP2C, right into rolling 2nd crack before throwing it into the external cooler.  About 3min between 1st and 2nd crack. Let's see how she fairs this time, a little deeper in colour than my previous MM roast. I'll crack it in a couple of weeks time.
  • Just finished another roast This time my minds eye wanted to visit Africa  :thumb: Today's roast on the KKTO 600gr of Ethiopian Harrar KK
  • Yeah well I roasted up 430g of Harrar/Robusta blend at the weekend and 230 gram of DR Constanza/PNG Bannum Wo/Harfusa yesterday. Should keep me going for a while. All out of DR now. Nearly out of Bannum Wo - 110g left, wonder what to mix it with. Maybe Brazil Monte Alegre and something else.
  • Just a typical day in the office: the singles roasted this week: Brasil Santa Ines:  from the farm that currently holds the Brasil COE record for highest scoring coffee ever http://www.casabrasilcoffees.com/farm/santa-inês Guatemala Santa Felisa "La Organica": micro organic auction lot SF4 (only 6x 22.67kg boxes produced, all six boxes here in Australia) .. Green Apples  http://santafelisacoffee.com/Finca_Santa_Felisa/Organic_Coffee_Auction_2011/Entradas/2011/5/8_Coffee_Profiles_1_files/La Organica.pdf Guatemala La Esperanza - honey process : multi COE winning farm from Huehuetenango (way-way-ten-ango).  (this available green from Beangreen) http://www.beangreen.com.au/product-info.php?pid196.html ps .. all the above coffees were blind cupped before purchase
  • An Easter roast on the KKTO A pre roast blend of 400 gr of Colombia Andes Santa Rita , last of the bag no more left  :'( 400 gr of Costa Rica Tarazzu from Jeff , also the last of the bag  :'( KK
  • First roast with the KKTO here in Dubai....    1kg of a dry process Yemen, roasted in the cool evening air (33C) ;) I arrived without my stash of green about a month ago and have finally found some time to set up the gear and get roasting again. Being caffeine deprived and desperate, i took a punt and bought 6kgs of Yemen (unidentified), from some spice traders who had a stall at a big trade fair / fun park which is close by. http://www.globalvillage.ae/ It's a small dry process bean, with quite a strong aroma when green, and comes with free rocks and various other bits and pieces. Anyway, it reminded me a bit of yemen bani Ismail so i bought it for about $12/kg. 2 days post roast and I'm glad I did. Smooth and semi sweet with plenty of body (aeropress). Shame the stall is shut down now for the summer but I still have their contact details in Yemen so might get some more. When I get some more time I'll post up some pics of life over here. Cheers.
  • Thanks for the update - would love to see some pics and hear more about the life over there.
  • Brilliant Borat!  Surely you just leave the beans in the sun to roast em...
  • Well done Borat. Might catchup for a coffee with you during the 2nd half of the year. May be visiting a few times actually. :-X :-X :-X
  • Welcome anytime Mycuppa. Let me know when you're about to leave and I'll PM you some contact details. Cheers
  • On Tuesday I roasted up some Yemen Sanani Mocha - looks good so far, and tonight I roasted up a batch of Java Ijen Sundried. I'll end up blending 50% of each bean for a Mocha Java blend. Next up will be a batch of Nepal Plantec Estate - a bean that I am quite intersted to try  :coffee2:
  • Roasted in the KKTO 940g equal parts: Java Kalistat, PNG Ondu, Finca el Carmen and Mexican Finca Kassandra.  Smells great fresh out of the roaster but I'll give it a week.  :thumb:
  • Fantastic looking roast Brett!

    Fantastic looking roast Brett!
Thanks Marc.  It smells divine this morning but I'll leave it in the one-way valve bag in the cupboard for a week.  Then I'll have the excitement of finding what temp I like best for extraction.  Serious fun eh!
  • Please let us know how this tastes, as the blend sounds divine.

Thanks mate, you can tell I'm short on Africans again eh!  Central America meets central Asia.  If the blend is good I shall cal it CAMCA, if it's not, I'll call nobody and pretend my internet is down  ;)
