After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

BZ99 - anything I need to know?

Bezzera has been nice enough to lend me a BZ99 while my 09 is getting fixed.

Apart from the cooling flush prior to pulling a shot, anything I need to know? Do I need to manually refill the boiler after texturing milk?

  • And 2+2=5! The luverly Strega is presumably set at the same brew temp as my 09, yet the lovely (x2) espresso from that machine was hot enough on first sip to cause me to recoil in surprise (but not displeasure!).

  • If the BZ99 is a HX isn't it?  I'm pretty sure it is. If so the boiler holds steam pressure, and a tube goes though it.  When you press brew it pumps fresh water through the tube, it heats (hence the HX for heat exchanger) and comes out the group at the right temp. :)  No need to prime the boiler anymore after steaming milk. But don't forget your old habits for when you get your beast back. :)
  • Good solid machines the 99s!  It was the top of my post Silvia list forba long time before I became blinded by bling.  You may even want to make them an offer if ya love it too much so be careful not to get too attached.  ;)

  • Yup piece of cake Kelsey. Just flush until the water is no longer coming out super heated and your good to go. Steam is great ( for mine) and coming from the 6910 its mindblowing. I use a small jug rather than a 600ml although it does the 600 no worries, but the recovery time is nil using the smaller jug. Drip tray will be your biggest drama. Its tiny. I use a small bowl to catch all the flush water and have only gone close once to overflow. Do the bowl thing and empty the tray every day and its all good. Make sure the drip tray goes in the right way, it has a cut out for the 3 way dump. Enjoy the awesomeness that is HX
  • Maybe when its out of warranty. Honestly, Ive got it so down pat with my little bowl that at the end of a big brewing there would be lucky to be 200 ml in the tray.  Would be very handy for backflushing though. Got to watch it then  :D
  • What's the usual duration of your cooling flush? And what's your visual cue that you're done? I haven't quite got the hang of making espresso with it yet and it's still a bit burny...
  • OK, overflush it is then. On the bonus, my wife thought her piccolo latte this morning was pure awesomesauce again. I could get used to the brew and texture at the same time.
  • Heres my routine. Put some hot water in 2 cups from the wand ( pump comes on to fill the boiler). Grind, dose, tamp. Run the flush - empty the cups, keep flushing until the element light comes on, lock in and pull the shot. All up the flush time is about 5 seconds if the machine has been on with no use for at least 10 mins. Hence the bowl to catch the flush water.

  • Correction - make that flush time about 8 seconds. Basically, as long as the water is not coming out bubbling and hissing. You have to be quick though and have your shot ready to go as they heat up bloody fast

    That's probably where I'm going wrong. I'll give it a shot with some KAPOW in a few minutes.
