After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

    Well this thread is old, aint it? Since the last post, I did the Cascade tour. WORTH EVERY CENT. It was amazing. They even had a stout ice cream which was wonderful. An aside from this, while in Tasmania, I discovered "Two Meter Tall Company" Dark Apple Ale. I liked it so much I went to their farm, ate some of their cow, and drank plenty of their ales. It's taken me until today to get some locally after much nagging of a local bottle-shop. http://2mt.com.au/brew_products.html The people can be contacted and will ship anywhere in Australia (I think it works out at around $100 a carton inc shipping, but worth it). So for the Dark Apple Ale - it is amazing. It's thick on the palate, and dark. It has a very strong taste of apple, but not in a sweet way - it's more like the little caramelised bits you get when you fry off apple and sugar. Combine that with fresh hops, two different kinds of yeast, and you have a beautiful refreshing drink. Om nom nom.

    So does it use apple? If so, in the first fermentation, for bottle conditioning or trade secret? Not at all sure I'd like it, but worth looking for a single bottle to try next time I pass Purvis Cellars.

    It uses about 20% Apples in brew cycle 1, then uses a small amount of champagne yeast only in the bottling. Think Stout mixed with Apple Cider mixed with Champagne. The guy who makes it is a wine maker with a lot of experience in France.

    I don't want a case, but will look out for it to try. Sounds kinda like an apple lambic perhaps. Worth trying anyway.

    Nice day in Tassie and have a free day so am making beer. Making a 8.2% wheat beer styled on Schneider Aventinus. Doing a decoction at the moment drinking a coffee from my Atomic, life couldn't be better. Cheers Chris

    A few weeks back I picked up a bottle of Huon dark ale (the apple one referred to earlier). While there I picked up some Moo Brew HefeWeizen. The Moo Brew is really nice as a summer beer, but seemed more like a KristalWeizen - didn't look cloudy to me at all, not that it remained in the glass long. The Huon dark ale - interesting. I am not sure if I like it or not. Body and head of a traditional stout, no strong cidery taste as such, but the acidity of the apples does come through. Perhaps it reminds me slightly of homebrew made with sucrose, but the sharpness was slightly offputting at the time. I can see hos some people would really like it though. An hour or so later, it is growing on me, so I will try it again and see what I think. Probably better as a beer for a cool day rather than a hot summer evening.

    Pick up some Broo Lager from a local drive through, never seen it before. $14 six pack. www.broo.com.au Clear apple juice colour. The head was very white not creamy at all and large bubbles. Didn't look right. Aroma of grass and orange. Tasted of malt caramel and candied orange/tangerine. The hops didn't taste fresh. Much more of a bitter ale than a true lager and has a "boiled" taste like Polish beers do. Not the most pleasant of beers and got worse as it warmed. Didn't find myself wanting more. Probably ok if you like VB.

    Cooper Mild Ale. Haven't seen this one prior to today. I don't think Coopers beer in general is great but it is good and easy drink. But usually it is the only palatable beer on the menu. Poured out a cloudy pale straw colour. There is yeast at the bottom of the bottle. Issue for some but I like it. The head was a natural colour. Bright yeasty aroma with apple and grass. Clean mild taste, light malt and a peppery bitter finish on the back of the tongue. A little (white sugar) sweetness too, just in the background. Very pleasant and still good as it warmed.

    We had visitors and the wife said we have no beer to serve them should they want a drink and sent me off to the bottle shop I looked at many beers but settled for Boags Premium Larger -from Tasmania  33552d1169704743-australia-appreciation-thread-post-aussie-icons-here-james-boags-premium-lager.jpg This is a beautiful beer The mouth feel is soft and creamy for a very fine thin liquid Something I haven't experienced before KK

    I generally avoid beer these days due to its deleterious effect on my ever expanding waistline, but when I do.... Little Creatures is a great default when nothing else is available. Coopers is punches above its weight in the cheap beer stakes. But if I have the option Schofferhoffer Heffeweizen is my beer of choice. Gotta have the right glass and know how to pour to make the most of it. Can also do the Austrian summer thing and stick a slice of lemon in it.

    And local beer is cheaper than water!!! What a great place!  Saigon is favorite but if ya brave there is lots of local stuff that tastes like soupy dishwater with bubbles.

    Beer - no particular order Becks Stella (the imported one only ... not the CUB under lic one) Little Creatures Pale Ale Corona Cider Monteath's (tried a few but found their's to be just right for me) Wine Not that much of a snob but we do enjoy a glass with meals most nights ... something easy to down....I stick to  blends - Cab Shiraz's; GSM's; or SCM's - and nothing too expensive

    Appreciating a Coopers Pale or two in the sun watching the guys surfing from off the back verandah at home. Not aspirational on the beer front or inspirational to go get wet but appreciating it  8)

    I'm on the Grolsch swing top at the moment - the theory being that I can always reseal the bottle and finish it later but so far that hasn't been a problem! ???

    I'm enjoying a Sapporo at Sailor's Thai Ivy in Sydney, along with an exquisite hot and sour pork belly. Now to find a decent espresso in the CBD tomorrow.

    KK, Corona = girly drink  :P I had a couple of Ashai beers during the week along with the staple in Peroni  :thumb:

    I don't mind the odd Corona despite it being like sex in a canoe.  When I was young and reckless we'd drink the neck of a Corona then top it up with Tequila.  We fast became young and leg less!

    Lemon is OK with wheat beer (in small doses), but lime goes far better with mexican beer. Cardamom is good with some beers too.

    Monteiths Black Beer watery and lacking somewhat over the description on the bottle. Still ok and better than some other dark beers I have had but give me a Coopers Stout (cheaper) or even a Vintage Ale (same price) before it.

    The Vintage is a once a year release only so you may not find any left. Release date was around 6 weeks ago and mine is resting for Christmas with the remains from last year and a 6 pack from 2010  :P

    Either follw them on FB or Twitter is a good way to find out may or may not work as a link :D or their main website you can subscribe to news http://www.coopers.com.au/ If you have a good independent bottle shop around where you live you might still get lucky for some of this years :)
