After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Breville's new dual boiler machine BES900

  • More problems with ours - has any one else had the steam knob come loose. Ours now comes loose every couple of days so I'll have to crack it open to have a look at what's broken. Grr
  • the green forum
  • Sure yep I will have a look today at what has failed with the knob and yes I will let breville know. It will be repairable under warranty but to be honest, another 2 weeks without the machine would suck, so I'm happy to start looking after minor repairs myself. This post, and it's the only forum I've mentioned it on, was more of an FYI and to see if was happening elsewhere. We would average about 6 shots/day over 7 months on ours so far. - AJ

Thanks for keeping us up to date.  The machine has a great warranty period offered and I'd be sending it back to the pros, but that is because my skills in this area are lacking.  Also, I'd worry about voiding the warranty.  Keep us posted mate.

Not sure if this is available When a car is serviced - a lot of places have loaner vehicles so one still has transport A loaner coffee machine may be a good idea, it does not have to be top of he line but adequate If they did have a BES900 as a loaner as one waits for a machine repair for an extended period of time the clients may decide to upgrade during its use So it's a win win I suggest that you have it assessed as to what part is needed Have it ordered and when it's your turn for repairs take it in for a same day fix This will give you a short down time KK
  • on 1345337854:
KK Sounds good in theory... 1: Loan unit is not gong to happen for many reasons... For some places they would need more than one. And as they are service agents, its not worth the effort. 2:  In most cases the assessment is what takes the time.  I know that in Brisbane,  parts are often on hand but even a simple job can take days before it progresses up the line. Thus as a service person I would not be responding immediately, spending time pulling apart / assessing and then re assemble and then hand back to customer, while awaiting parts to arrive. Goes into the service line, gets assessed - fixed with parts on hand OR parts ordered, re assembled and client collects/pays. Now if it was a substantial machine or under a contract where a loan was included; that is a different matter. But for most items, a loan is just not possible.  And I know that I would not be happy loaning to unknowns, let alone the service and clean that would be needed afterwards.
    All valid points KK
  • A loaner machine sounds a great idea in principle but yes I can see the pitfalls. I'm sure a friend of ours who had a Giotto serviced got a loaner. Anyway, it doesn't look easily fixed, so maybe I will have to drop it back. At the moment when it comes loose, I just bang it back on with my hand, but at some point its just going to give up. I'll check in with the service centre on Monday. You can probably tell by my posts, that my initial reaction is pretty grumpy, after all, no-one likes something to stop doing what it's supposed to, and then to go through all the hassle of getting to a service centre and the wait while its there. Ultimatley though, you have to keep calm and carry on as the brits say.
  • Just wanted to say that my BES900 is still going strong, I think I'm still getting great coffee out of it, just saying... I hope that everyone that does have problems don't have to wait too long for repairs.
  • Here is a pic of my setup ... only had it for a few weeks now, but getting some great coffee. I had to get some shims for the grinder (which was very painless) but other than that I haven't had any dramas. photo.jpg
  • Very nice Spoony  :thumb: Enjoy the coffee from your new set up KK

Well said.  Fingers crossed it's a simple repair. And you located where ?
Wahroonga - so near Hornsby which is the repair centre. I might call them today
  • Well - dropped it off - at least 2 weeks, so gain stuck at home with no coffee  :-[ Not sure from looking at it whether its an engineering issue that might pop up on others, the guys I driopped it off at were a pretty grumpy lot so I doubt I'll get any gems from them to share here. Basically, the first time it happened it was dramas as we couldn't shut the steam off. In the lead-up to this happening, the knob got noticeably looser. It lasted about a week before popping again, then each time we have pushed it back, it has popped off sooner. If I could have fixed it here, I would have, believe me, I do not like being left at home without coffee, it sucks. It kinda makes sense to have some sort of spare around when you think about the extra $70/week we spend when it's not here. Hope we get it back soon, I thought being on the bleeding edge might have some downside, I hope that this is the last for a while.
  • A little to much and OTT but worth a watch as I don't think it has been added here before. [embed=425,349]

Yes a little geeky,... but i can easily forsee m/c's with usb / wirless links to enable grew data logging and charting  to be downloaded..or even displayed on an inbuilt screen. ! :o
  • Haha, In that EU Gastroback GmbH site - Did you see the smart grinder under 'accessories' is called the "Design Coffee Grinder Advanced Pro" :thumb: :thumb:
  • It's been a long 4th week without the pleasure if the freshly ground bean and the sound of the Breville priming for another lovely shot. The space stands empty - like our pockets, having to find some random local barista to create our daily addiction. Oh we yearn for the svelte and shiny machine back but it's sitting alone and forgotten in the dusty back room of a Breville fix-it man. A loose knob was all it took to take our joy away - may it come back and last a few more days than it did last time. I'm sure that Italian beauty that was making eyes at me when I decided to go Breville is laughing now - loving on the bleeding edge is our life now - like a mission to mars our machine number 00000001 is having some technical adjustments as we explore new frontiers - AJ

To plunge, or not to plunge, that is the conundrum: Whether 'tis Nobler in the senses to suffer The sludge and acid of random baristi, Or to take Arms against a Sea of bubbles, And by opposing end them: to taste, to weep No more; and by a taste, to say we end The palate-ache, and the thousand Natural shocks We feel your pain Ajst2duk!

That's better than my lame attempt at prose - must be having caffeine withdrawal haha - even tried coffee bags :(
  • The gap on my bench and the one in my heart is filled again - aromas of fresh coffee once again get the day underway at chez AJ All it took was two weeks, one star washer and a new knob, now the machine is able to bite as well as it barks - creamy espresso with fresh beans is now the fisrt morning task, one that brings great joy I'm hoping now that the warranty has nearly slipped by, that it all holds together, and delivers good taste for a few years to come AJ

  • Morning all. Hope your mornings have been full of delightfully aromatic (and tasty) brown liquid ... I'm talking about coffee for those of us who are a little slower :) I have a question that I posted on "the other" forum but I haven't received an answer so thought I'd ask here as well: Does anyone have any knowledge on how the hot water outlet is supplied with water or an internal schematic of the BES900? I ask this because I am getting hot water out of the hot water spout that has a light brown tinge. Is it possible to get rancid coffee through the hot water tap or am I seeing something else? I clear water back flush after every coffee making session and I do a chemical back flush every few weeks using caffetto. I also filter all the water that goes into the machine and have been vigilant to change the filter in the machine as recommended.
  • Once again I'm reminded how lucky we are to have members like AM on our forum. Now, who likes jigsaws... http://www.ereplacementparts.com/breville-bes900xl-the-dual-boiler-parts-c-116052_116055_187843.html

I dont know if they have it in Perth, but the Local Hardly Normals ( And DJ's) , have a Breville display of the internals of the DB. Its an "exploded"  section of the m/c  using actual components  to show the water paths and the functions... very informative. Its been a while since i looked at it, so im afraid i wouldn't rely on my memory to describe the plumbing ( its complex ) I will bet  you could find it on line somewhere too !

See this link and you will find the cut away and many other helpful images - http://coffeegeek.com/proreviews/firstlook/brevilledualboiler/details KK
  • Thanks for the help guys ... to be honest I am having problems figuring out how it is all plumbed together from the images you guys have found etc. I might go see if the local hardly normals has a cut away model that I can look at otherwise I think it is a trip to the service center. I did spend quite a bit of time cleaning it this arvo (did 2 chemical back flushes) and it did clear up quite a bit so that is promising but I still want too know if it should be physically possible for it to happen under normal circumstances.
  • The review says hot water comes from the brew boiler, there should be a 3 way valve between the brew boiler which prevents flow going from the grouphead to the boiler but I cant find it in any of the pics. Its possible something is wrong with the valve though.
  • Another new reliability issue has popped up on mine, just posting in case anyone else has had the same or similar. Now and then, the machine will short-shot the brewing, so with a consistently filled and tamped basket, extracted at 9bar, sometimes the double shot program will just cut the shot off at 15-16 secs. It started doing this very occasionally, but now that I'm over the 12 month warranty threshold, it's started to become much more regular. As you can imagine, the growing incidence of "sink-shots" has become annoying and expensive. There is also a new clattering noise which is starting to worry me, happened the first time when I was backflushing. I'm reluctant to send it once again back to the servicve centre for two reasons, potential cost and another major time out. I do like the machine and I so want to believe in this product, however I'm starting to lose confidence in it. I hope it doesn't just decide to turn up its feet and fail on me AJ
