Where to buy fresh roasted beans in Adelaide

edited January 1970 in Have your say
Hi guys, hopefully this is the right spot for this question and hopefully I don't break any rules by possibly mentioning 'non sponsor' companies.

I generally use Merlo beans (or coffeesnobs) but I've been slack in ordering a fresh lot, and after having to shim my smart grinder today, i chewed through a few more than I wanted to getting the grind right again.  Long story short, I'm going to run out before I can get some more delivered from the aforementioned roasters.

I've tried a couple of local roasters,  ('the perfect cup' in central markets, 'la crema/coffee craft', 'AAA diamond' ) but have always ended up going back to the more expensive interstate stuff.

My question is, can anyone recommend a decent roaster in Adelaide where I can get some beans, preferably prior to the weekend?

Thanks in advance
Rob

  • Hi Prydey and welcome to the forum. Hopefully Bean Flying will be able to drop by as he's in SA and should know where to find beans. Our admin is also in SA but is away on a short break until after the weekend. I feel your pain - I frequently run short at inopportune moments!
  • Welcome Rob. Suggest you google Mahalia's No2 blend. Worth a shot! http://www.mahaliacoffee.com.au/Outlets-Adelaide.html Cheers Jonty PS, Kelsey never insult a Victoria by stating they live in SA! ;)

I thought you were a Sydney boy Kelsey. Turns out you're one of "them" :D :stir
  • Is Marc Barun ("The Coffee Barun") not still roasting in Sefton Park?

Once you get sorted, you might want to look at roasted beans from Jeff  http://www.mycuppa.com.au/Fresh-Roasted-Coffee/  great selection good prices and he is an excellent roaster
  • I have only once tried Mahalia's coffee - number four blend was awesome. Her web site details stockists in adelaide Hope that helps
  • Try: http://www.thecoffeebarun.com/ Also: http://www.kappys.com.au/ They are very close to the central market. The "J" Blend is a good all rounder. When I lived in SA I used to buy quite a bit of coffee from these two. Also, Rio Coffee, but always check their roasted on dates.
  • thanks guys.  i have also since discovered that i can get coffeesnobs (fiefys blend) from fiefy's specialty cafe on pirie st.  thanks for all the suggestions also.  as much as i like Merlo, the postage costs can start to add up after a while, and you can't just duck out and buy some at the last minute..
  • If you like Merlo (I love Merlos) you'll also love mycuppa.com.au or phoning and ordering beans from Cosmorex.  Ministry of Grounds is awesome also.  Did you also know that BeanGreen (whomstock Merlo) have browns and orders over $50 are free!  You'll run out of money before you run out of choices of great coffee from our sponsors!

Hey Brett, do you mean Bean Green supply Merlo with beans or Bean Green carry Merlo beans and on sell them ?
  • they 'on sell' Merlo beans.  Merlo roast their own I believe.

    Spot on!
  • If you are still looking, Simply Coffee in Rundle Street Kent Town are very good. Peter and Lucy were the original owners of The Perfect Cup in The Central Market. http://www.simplycoffee.com.au Fantastic coffee and Peter is also a good source of coffee machines and has a great repair/maintenance guy when your machine needs a service.
  • been a while. i decided to stick with merlo and just be more organised so that i don't run out.  the postage issue is still there, but as long as i like the coffee, i'll find ways to justify it. drinking merlo brazilians at the moment.  a bit milder than the kenyans but very nice and my new favourite.

Nothing against Merlo, but believe you'll do as well or better with any of our 3 sponsors mentioned in Brett's post A

Completely agree!  Live excitedly for the next one Prydey... Order from one of the others in my post and prepare to be blown away.  If I'm wrong Ill eat my words...washed down with some sponsor brew  :thumb:
  • Coffee Barun have settle into a good mojo and they roast for filter :) A new one is monastery, currently stocking at Argos. Watch out for them. Pure in Glenelg always has a variety of roasters beans on hand, and places like exchange and please say please usually have melbourne coffee for sale and the bar9 stores stocks 5senses. De groot appeal to the fair trade crowd and barossa roasters have a few awards for their beans. There are more... D'angelo, Rio, Bootleg, Cirelli and so on...
  • I finally got around to trying a local roaster - namely Red Berry Espresso.  they are a small boutique roaster, and so far i've been pretty happy with what i've tried.  tried some brazillian beans and now currently sampling some Indian beans.  consistency from grind to grind confirms the beans are as fresh as they claim with the roast date.  so far so good. they are also a very cyclist friendly cafe which is a bonus if i'm ever in that area on my bike.
  • I highly recommend kappy's (edit: refer to site rules please) after moving here from London we struggled to find a really good roaster in the CBD. Very happy to find kappys... nice little write up here too: http://www.intricatelylinked.com/adelaide-coffee-roastery-kappys/
  • Hi Tony and welcome. Thanks for sharing your experience!  Good local Roasteries are not the norm!  Gla you've found one!
  • up here in noosa we've got a couple of great local coffee hot spots but nothing like the share volume and variety I'm used to in Melbourne - thank god the quality is excellent to make up for it !

Yes Tony, compared to Sydney and Melbourne, Adelaide is still a little behind on the specialty coffee front - my personal observation, after moving here for family reasons from Sydney 6-7 yrs ago, is that they're so ingrained into the 'italian coffee" thing, with Italian being such a cultural influence in food/restaurants in Adelaide. And the problem with that (IMHO)?: 1) the "we already know best" italian attitude (ie that's not how my grandmother used to do it 70 years ago in Naples... & 2) the dark, heavily roasted thing on the second point, there is a fairly big roaster in a place called Rio Coffee in Stepney, however they're very much invested in 2) ie the dark, heavily roasted thing, to the point that I find their beans almost undrinkable - very dark, oily (and often not fresh). Their previous roaster, a guy called Tony D'angelo who has gone out on his own (somewhere near Mile End) is a great guy, although I guess he learnt his trade at Rio, so whether that means he still focusses on the dark roast-thing, I'm not sure. A PS should probably move this thread - will leave it here temporarily and shift to 'industry' in a day or so
  • Interesting!  I've actually started roasting darker since starting a journey it's a commercial lever machine.  I'm enjoying coffee that tastes like coffee and thus find the light roasts now less attractive.  Mine aren't overly dark mind... only to the first snaps of second crack but it's certainly darker than many commercial roasts I've bought recently.

same i dont hit second crack any more but i do try and max out on the developmental / coasting stages of the roast to get more flavour and a bit of colour (not dark) on the bean I cant stand green roasts and coffee that tastes like apples or some sort of flakey pastry - if i wanted to eat an apple Id eat an apple ! But Im also allergic to rancid foods so if a roast has been pushed too far or if the beans are too old it makes me feel sick - which is not what you want when you're drinking a coffee! its a fine line between pleasure and pain!
