After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Dead Sunbeam Cafe Aromatic (steam just pours out)

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
Hello

Our Sunbeam Cafe Aromatic died, as soon as you turn it on and it warms up it justblows steam everywhere.

The Sunbeam Cafe Aromatic was a great fool-proof machine as long as you grind to the right size and brew fresh coffee (roasted no older than 1 week).  We made about 4 double shots a day for 2 years.

I assume the Cafe Aroma is not servicable and we are looking at purchasing one of the following.

1) Sunbeam EM6900 $600 AUD
2) Bodum Granos $500 AUD
3) Rancilo Silivia $700AUD

Any advice?

  • G'day FearTec, are you definately sure that your machine is un-fixable? If you're happy with the results it gives you, it might be worth your while to get it repaired (it might be something simple, you never know). If you have/need to upgrade, the Silvia would get my vote as being a solid performer and it will last you for ages. I own one so my view is biased somewhat. I've heard that they're a bit hard to come by in Aus at the moment though. I've heard good and bad things about the EM6900. I haven't heard anything, good or bad, about the Granos. If you check the coffeegeek site, there's heaps of reviews on just about every machine on the planet. Bear in mind that a lot of the reviews are from the owners of the machines, and they will obviously be biased towards their own machine. Another machine that is worth a mention is the Imat mokita. It's got similar specs to the Silvia, but it's a couple of hunderd clams cheaper. Hope this helps.
  • Thanks for the reply, we will choose something after reading some more..
  • Hi Ft - if you've had a few years of good service from the Aromatica you're probably ready to upgrade anyway. The Sylvia's got a reputation as a really good, solid performer, while the EM 6900's  building a reputation as a really good purist's machine. It's certainly great value at $600 and i've heard you can get it a bit cheaper if you shop around. Don't know about the Granos but it would worry me that it's bought out by Bodum. DR
