After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Welcome mate!  I've owned a few roasters over the years and my choices would be: KKTO - see Crema site for more details http://beangreen.com.au/product-info.php?pid138.html My Behmor has been excellent but the KKTO makes the coffee taste better more consistently.  Ministry of Grounds sold me my Behmor and when it blew a board their after-sales was second to none!! Good luck with the search mate... How much are you willing to spend??
  • Thanks Brett. Depends on how many roasts i has notched up but say indicatively around the 200s is probably fair. I did check out the KKTO on an alternative link, he seems to be in between models at the moment, couldn't seem to find the whole package, just parts. That link on your post shows the baby, which I like the idea of, but i don't like that you can't see the roast develop. Looks like i'm stuck with my popper for a while yet.

The KKTO will be a self build but there is plenty of help here and the economics are favorable given the batch size, use ability, control and aesthetic appeal.  Poppers are great but as you've no doubt outgrown this mode understandably you want more.  The Behmor is a good option but I'd suggest respectfully that given you're further along the journey than most Behmor buyers it represents merely a good interim roaster.  Having said all that, there's not much else out there is there??  I had a BBQ drum roaster for a bit which was terrific until you needed to dump and cool the beans.... Help brains trust.... What else fills the niche?
  • Nothing I'm afraid Brett. I was in the same predicament years ago.  Behmor or KKTO. I went the KKTO because it can roast different size batches, also parts are easy to replace when something wears out or breaks.  I've heard some Behmor owner trying to fix theirs with errors codes etc.  Also  you can dump the beans when you want with a KKTO unlike the Behmor.  The Behmor has advantages though like less smoke, compact unit off the shelf. The KKTO can be built with average DIY skills.  Parts total around $300 I think from memory when we built Kelseys.  It's still going.  Yes it was rough but it roasts alright!  :) KK still sells most of the parts I think for a DIY build.  Hopefully he will pop his head in here soon. :) Good luck on your quest CoffeeWala
  • Thanks for the suggestions gents.
  • All the places I've seem the Behmor it's out of stock. :(  They all must be waiting on a new Aussie shipment. Why don't you email Brendan at BeanGreen, http://beangreen.com.au/product-list.php?coffee_roasters-pg1-cid9.html and see when he's getting more stock and how much. He's the best person to deal with for green beans too, very helpful, fast shipping and free shipping if you spend over $75 on beans!
  • Just emailed Brendan, he reckons 2 weeks.  But he did mention the word customs which makes me think it will take longer.

If BeanGreen are stocking Behmors then at least I'd have plenty of confidence in their after-sales service.  That's probably the best option in this bracket after the KKTO.  What was that roaster Richard had?!
  • I ended up picking up a used Behmor off gumtree. It has been looked after and wasn't a bad choice cost wise, compared to setting up a KKTO without any salvage, or even trying to electrocute myself by modding my old Crazy popper. I used ethanol (i.e vodka at the back of the cupboard) to degrease the inside and soaked the drum and chaff tray in coffee cleaner overnight and it now looks as good as new. Interesting in that it is a very different user experience to the popper. I've already put through three quarter of a kilo of Ministry's Yirgacheffe Chelba. Maybe it's just these beans but they hit first with so much power that they just roll straight into second.  I seem to have worked something out with P3 + D setting that works, but experimenting on this thing is for the brave, very easy to open the door to a stinking pile of charcoal. Anyway I'll try some other coffees in it, just ordered three more kgs from Ministry Grounds.
  • Great score and a great bean to christen your new roaster with!! Congratulations!!
