After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Crema magazine - Spring issue

edited January 1970 in Off-topic
Hi guys - just to let you know, the Spring issue of Crema should be in newsagents [Sydney, Melb, Brisbane] from today. As ever, any feedback most welcome.

Just so you know, we've done a 'Showcase' of upmarket espresso machines in this issue. Note that this is not a 'review', because we're assuming that with a decent operator, all these machines should be able to produce a decent shot - we've found the problem with the upmarket machines (for most consumers) in Australia is more a question of where you can get them!

Anyway, as i said, any comments/suggestions (especially positive ones!) most welcome.

Hey mate, just got the mag and had a quick read. Nice work. But I noticed that all of the machines on pgs 26 & 27 were all fairly similarly priced, and all bar the expobar were heat-exchange machines. All of them had e61 groups. Maybe you could have looked at some of the more expensive single boiler machines (isomac zaffiro, what about a silvia???), some of the dual-boilers (there are another two I can think of), and even some cheaper heat-exchange machines (expobar also have the 'office' line of machines which are essentially the same internals as most hx machines, but much cheaper ... mine was less than half the price of the giotto (giotto ~$2500, office pulser ~$1200ish), and essentially does the same job). A bit more variety, perhaps? You could also have written something about what you get for that price - apart from a pretty Italian machine - like a section about how a heat-exchange works, a section on dual boilers vs single boilers vs single boilers with hx's. And definately a section on the e61 group head - it's history, how it works, that sort of stuff. These machines aren't just that price because they're stylish and they look nice - they're expensive because they're serious pieces of hardware. Other than that, it's a nice mag. Lots of eye candy, but I guess what I'm saying is that eye-candy can be a lot more informative too. Sure, some readers might find it a bit heavy, but they don't have to read the heavy bits, they can just keep looking at the eye candy as they sip their lar-tays.
  • Ash, I thought the mag was really good, especially the article about stickies (although more could have been said about eiseeins - I have paid about $80 for 500 ml bottles - surely they aren't that expensive, for what they are. My view on the showcase: I would prefer to see the espresso machines done separately from fully auto machines. I think they are targeted at completely different models. The mag is targeted, I think, to espresso drinkers, and, as Matty said, perhaps many of the readers would like to see a wider range of espresso machines reviewed (I know it isn't a review as such). Also, I would have thought you would say that the Splendor is the duck's nuts of espresso machines, and everything else is but a step towards it. And I am being completely objective. Serious other suggestions: 1. Perhaps a review focusing on the importance of after sales service. 2. A grinder review? Anyway, great mag, should be as good as the Feb issue of the AFR Smart Investor mag. P
