ristretto Vs espresso

edited January 1970 in Off-topic
Ok, the more coffee I drink, the more inclined I am to try it without milk, and the shorter it seems to get.

Now I am down to a ristretto (about 12ml of pure crema) - or better still, a double ristretto, and I'm finding it harder and harder to drink those damn milky coffees

And if it is an espresso (short black), then it has to me no more than 20ml, or forget-about-it!

Surely I am not the only one?

What do others think?

  • This reminds me of when I first turned Lukey into an espresso drinker. Once trying espresso without milk, he became almost obsessed with shorter and tighter pours. Then we did a tasting where there was a beautifully balanced coffee. He then started to appreciate the balance of the espresso over the intensity of flavour of the ristretto. I am an espresso drinker myself, but the occasional ristretto pulled by a barista gun does not go amiss.
  • I will typically have a double ristretto in the morning before I have a cappuccino or flat white (all on my home machine). I will normally roast up a blend or SO solely for my double ristrettos (and hoping that I don't have to adjust the grind too much when I switch to the blend I use for the milk based drinks. When I go out, I used to ask for a double ristretto cappuccino but after being asked what a ristretto was at too many places by the PBTM, I decided to just resign myself to espresso based cappuccinos instead. P
  • ah thats a killer! ill make you a ristretto cap :)
  • I went somewhere recently and asked for a double ristretto cafe latte, only to be informed that the roast was toast, and not worth the effort. So the guy sold me on a couple of espressos in quick succession instead, canvassing different single origin beans. You gotta give the man credit for initiative (and the espresso tasted great)! ACG

ahh those were the days, if i'm having a sweet tooth moment, definitely a ristretto, but nothing comes close to well balanced espresso. luke
  • its all about the double ristretto for me @ the mo! ACG
  • haha so many times ive asked for a milk based drink to be made on a risretto shot but each time the EMO has told me that it couldent be done. i have no idea why when they knew what a risretto was but i figured that if they thought they couldent do it then it was best not to ask them to try  :-/ i absolutely love a dbl risretto with a a dash of cold milk slid down the side of the glass to keep all that deliciously golden deliciousness  intact :)
  • I also like the dash of cold milk with my db ristretto, so I can throw it down in an instant, as usually, when I am working, an instant is all that I have! ACG
  • For me I'll have a double shot restricted every morning followed by a latte and that will do me but IF the first shot is particularly good I follow it up with another then a cigarette tooo good
  • Enough of lurking - time to post an opinion! I'd had about enough of ristrettos until September last year when one place in Perth finally started doing them good enough to drink, now they seem to be improving all over the place - ristretto for me these days.
  • I had an interesting conversation with a well known and knowledgable "coffee
  • I love a tight shot thick like liquer (speiling?) just the first few drops mmmmm
