After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

When's your favourite time to roast?

For me I keep fantasising about getting into the shed in the wee hours of the morning, when there are no disturbances and the electrify is cheaper, and doing some back to back roasts - but the reality is with a couple of young kids I'm usually sleeping at this time, so eatlyish morning, say 9 am, is when I end up cranking up the corretto - which is when the kids are often around - which us as anyone who has roasted before will tell you not an ideal time to roast, as roasting requires your complete attention and focus!

What about others? When do you like most to roast and why?

  • I have a brief window on Tuesday and Wednesday when there is no one home and I can dedicate about 1/2 hour or so to cranking out a couple of roasts (well maybe a bit more than a couple). With the KKTO this gives me a week or two supply of something different to my normal. I can't wait for life to slow down a little so I can get into roasting a bit more (fat chance I reckon).
  • When ever I need to, and that's about once a week. Everything is set up in the shed ready to go at a moments notice, no kids around, the only spectators I have are the dog and the chooks, neither appear all that interested. ;D Guess I'm fortunate in the fact that I'm retired and have plenty of time to devote to this type of activity. :)
  • weekend afternoons are when I usually roast. It's a fun way to spend the afternoon and usually is the only time in my week where I have a few spare hours to bash out some roasts. I like to roast at night too but have stopped for the time being as I need to replace the fluoro tubes in my garage with ones that have full natural light colour spectrum/colour temperature. Something around 6500K, now if only I can find somewhere that will sell me 2 and not a pack of 50!
  • really enjoying my Guatemalan home roast at the moment - seven days post roast and down dosed = bloody yum!
  • Typical - managed to squeeze in some shed time yesterday to do a home roast of some Peru Ceju de Selva Estate, and was just starting to hit second crack - when both my kids ran in upset about something or other - so I quickly consoled them before pulling the roast and cooling the beans down, but not before I managed to take the roast about 20secs over what I would normally take it... Oh well, I guess I'll know in a few days time whether its worth drinking or not!  :o
  • meddling kids!  ;D  Its always the critical point in a roast isn't it when someone decides to interrupt? At the very least you'll be able to grind them and put them on the garden.

    What? The kids! ;D ;D ;D
I was thinking teh same...  Bit of blood and bone and the coffee trees would smile :-")
I see you finally got a post against your name AM. ;D
  • Dunno why but my average roast with the KKTO takes around 28 to 30 mins plus five min pre-heat - I mean the coffee that it's producing is amazing so I don't complain and I only ever do 750g roasts b/c I don't see the point in doing a smaller one but it's definitely not a five minute job!
  • likewise I'm just really happy with the quality of my roasts regardless of the time takes and I have noticed that on warmer days I can potentially knock a couple of minutes off the roast time I also have one of the prototype KKTO and had to do a bit of rewiring and insulating of the agitator arm to get it up and running - thankfully the roaster i use for my cafe is also a qualified technician and he helped me out with this and with my KKTO I can actually get the roast 'smoking' (but hopefully not burning!)  - which is something I never managed to do with my Gene Cafe, as it struggled to generate enough heat! :o
  • I prefer early in the day when all is quiet, but work it in around the other demands of day to day life!!
