After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Industry info.

Just got this info. from the Australian Bureau of Stats - thought some of you may be interested:

$7.1b was generated from cafe and restaurant businesses in 2003-2004.

   * At the end of June, there were 15,000 cafes and restaurant businesses operating throughout Australia .
   * Three-quarters of cafes and restaurant locations were based in metropolitan areas.
   * Just over a third (34%) of these businesses were licensed.
   * There were 1.1 million seats available for dining in cafes and restaurants at the end of June 2004.

Surprise, surprise - they add that: cafes and restaurants were predominantly small businesses with most (63%) employing less than 10 people.

   * New South Wales accounted for 38% of all businesses in Australia, 31% of all employment and generated just over a third (34%) of total income.
   * Victorian cafes and restaurants comprised just under a quarter of all businesses (23%), 24% of all income and a quarter of all employment.

Apparently, cafes and restaurants reported an operating profit before tax of $400m, which represented an operating profit margin of 4% during 2003-04. These businesses generated 21% of all income and had an operating profit before tax of $40m.

There were 190,000 people working in cafes and restaurants, with over half (53%) working as casuals, at the end of June 2004. Over 40% of this workforce occupied waiter/waitress positions, while chefs and cooks accounted for about 22% of all occupations.

  • Picked this up in a US survey conducted (in an informal survey of its readers by Businessweek magazine). Sales of specialty coffees, now $10 billion today, are expected to grow 7% annually, while sales of traditional coffee brands slide downward. Maxwell House alone dropped $75 million in supermarket sales in the past two years, about one-fifth of its overall supermarket sales. Our complete findings from the survey of 25-45 year olds are as follows:
  • Hi guys - noticed on the News that cafe business increased 8.5% in the last financial year, however it seems that almost all cafe owners that I have spoken to, feel that business has been pretty tough. I presume that means most of the increased revenue has come from more cafes, rather than more business per cafe.  Would be interested to know if anyone has any facts on the above. -A
  • Here's part of the answer, from a recent press release by BIS SHRAPNEL - a research company. AUSTRALIANS drink more coffee than ever before and they are gulping it down in
