  • Update on the Columbian Mountain water process decaf I roasted This is a beautiful coffee at 5 days post roast It does lack a little acidity, it has a lingering but mild chocolate after-taste for 20 minutes I will roast it again KK
  • Ran myself right out of roasted beans a couple of days ago so down to the shed to roast 625g of Yirg, as usual took it to full city +, turned out well, let it degas for a full 18 hours before I broke her open, it's drinking ok but imagine it will improve over the next few days. ::)
  • I roasted a second batch of decaf on the KKTO again today, The roasting process was just like normal beans 500 grams of  Columbian Mountain water process decaf Flavour is all there, so much so that most people wouldn't know its a decaf It's one of a few green beans that is sold by Barazi to current KKTO owners and home roasters that ring direct or visit the site KK
  • drinking coffee from work at the moment :( not that that is a bad thing but really need to get the home roast cranking in the new place!

They are roasted 2 X 500 grams of roasted beans 2 X different varieties (its a surprise) I will label them for you and include best start date KK
  • Many thanks Mr K! I did manage to squeeze out 800g of Nepali Plantec Estate yesterday while the outlaws were away but this was roasted for filter and strictly for work only, as it should be considering that the green beans cost more than the roasted ones that I buy! Thanks again in advance for the coffee - looking forward to trying something new Cheers, ACG

Pat the roasted beans have been posted in a 3 kg Australia Post pre paid post bag Hope they deliver it on Friday if they are quick, if not you will see the coffee arrive on Monday You can report on the flavour profile KK
  • many thanks to KK for sending some superlative coffee my way - I was just starting to despair about my home coffee stakes: at home with no fresh roast and looking after two kids while mum is out, and last coffee I had at the local cafe was sub-par... what to do! Was thinking of packing the kids in the car and driving to work to get a good cup of Joe when low and behold there is a ring at the door and the postie dropped a couple of sizable bags of KK's finest! My faith in the world has been restored and now I think its time for another cup... Thanks KK for restoring my faith in mankind and coffee! Cheers, P
  • ahh.. just had a cup of PNG Kinjibi AA - five days post roast served with Miranda Dale Unhomoginised milk... and let me just say it was damned delicious! Thanks Mr K!
  • Its my pleasure Pat Call me a marriage councillor  ::) But you can thank the KKTO roaster as it's done all the work and I just watched. Another 30 more roasts and it will hit 400 When you get to the Ethiopian @ about 10 days post roast you can blend them as they mix well together Now I want some feedback If the beans were sent to you as a blind test would you have thought that they were professionally roasted ? or an obvious home roaster job KK
  • Bliss do you want some insulation for the new liner I have some left over cut off pieces Its the same as the last lot I gave you KK
  • Exactly "if there's any left" !!! Tomorrow I want to add a bit of Nicaragua El Limoncillo (for it's acidity) just to see what it's like. I guess when you don't have time to read up on what you're doing, just jump in and start.

definitely looks like a pro job due to even colouration, good moisture content, and proof in the cup! One thing I occasionally question with my own roasting on the kkto is the moisture content of the beans the beans after roasting - as even with insulation (a towel wrapped around roaster - silicon tubing kept falling off so I havent been using it) my roasts are still taking 25mins on average, and I wonder if this elongated roast profile dries the beans out? I can usually tell how the coffee clumps or settles in the group handle, as to relative moisture content though, and the coffee feels different between your finger and thumb when its dry anyway no such 'problems' with KK's roasts, and I havent been  too concerned with my own recently, either, and I'm guessing it also depends a lot on the country / continent of origin, and how the beans are harvested and processed, as some of the African beans especially come up a bit 'dry' after roasting - but this in no way seems to negatively effect palate structure, or depth of palate... so to answer your question: the beans you gave me look and taste great, certainly better than many 'commercial' roasts I've looked at! Cheers a million Pat
  • Thanks for the report Pat, glad I could help Which silicone ring is coming off The silicone tubing does expand a little when they are new and If its the bottom ring and slipping happens you can cut 1mm at a time to shorten If the top ring slips off you can dab a little silicone around the pot ring from a tube to glue it in place The towel or fire blanket should be placed over the bottom ring Ring me if you have time and I will explain the roast methods KK
  • I just roasted up a batch of Nicaragua La Gloria Las Brisas. I did a batch last week, but I had visitors arrive right in between 1st and 2nd crack (not as painful as it sounds  :D) and I think they got a bit overdone. Still very tasty though.
  • Roasted 2 batches 500 grams of Peru Ceja de Selva Estate - Organic for my lovely wife 500 grams of Columbian Mountain water process decaf greens for me as I am still on doctors orders not to have caffeine KK
  • I was tempted by a HT.  It's the right size for me, I just roast for little old me and I can try different beans more often!  Pity they cost so much... you been saving up AM?  OR did you get a fixer upper? I still love my KKTO KK, don't worry. I roasted some beans up at a party on Monday.  Had the neighbours over and we got talking about coffee, they had a flick though beanscene magazine and theen asked what was that wierd thing over there ont he trolley (my KKTO).  So I demo'd a roast and gave a few bags away.  Possible customers.... They seemed amazed that you could roast your own so quickly.  They thought it took hours! Anyway they got to take away some Laos Dong Hua Sao.  Not a bad bean so far, but I'm only roasting as SO so far.

The KKTO can roast smaller than 300 gram with a little mod For under 300 grams the agitator end needs to travel closer to the edge of the insert Just one end is fine, and this can be done very simply with a small bulldog clip that is available form stationary stores KK
  • This week I did a Kenya Peaberry, Peru and the Bo'oan, all 80-100gm.  They are all developing nicely, since changing the roasting I've found that they are better left a while than used straight away like I could before.  The Peru has a nutty smell, the Peaberry a distinct chocolate smell, which is different to the fruity smells I had before (roasted darker this time though) and the Bo'oan is still developing, didn't have much of a smell to start. I'm trying the Peru and Peaberry tomorrow so we'll see how they taste.
  • Today the KKTO was blend roasting as a single roast Total of 850 grams 550 grams of PNG Elephant (last of the batch) 300 grams of Brazil Alterosa AA I am visiting a cafe and he wants a sample to try I have had these 2 beans before and were a great combination  KK
  • Mmm well the Peaberry was horrible as a long black, to me there was no distinguishing taste, it has such a chocolate smell though that I imagine it might be great as a cappuccino, I'll have to do a lighter roast and hopefully get the fruit back.  I actually tried the Bo'oan instead of the Peru, it still has barely a smell but what is there is a fruity type of smell.  I made a cappuccino from it and it goes down really well, it's sweet enough to have no sugar with.  The Peru is getting nuttier and nuttier so that will be first thing tomorrow.
  • I have roasted 2 X 600gr lots on the KKTO 600gr of Ethiopian Gambala Naturals 600gr of Peru Ceja de Selva Estate - Organic KK
