Barista training Melbourne

Hi Everyone,
I've just stumbled across your site and was pleasantly surprised with what I found!
I've been a keen coffee drinker for some time now, and used to think I was a bit of a connoisseur! A little investigation into doing a barista course soon put that thought to rest. I currently use a very basic sunbeam machine at home and some of the time it manages to produce a reasonable espresso.
I live in the Melbourne area and only work part-time and would like to investigate being a barista. Either way I'd love to do a course.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I've seen a little bit about Justin Metcalf (cafe learning) who seems to be attached to the Sydney based Toby's Estate- but can't find too much info on him. Also the William Anglis Institute seemed to offer a pretty thorough course.
Anyway if anyone had any advice that'd be great.

Never heard of cafe learning, but the other two are highly recommended. I suggest that you go along and have a look for yourself, especially at Veneziano - where you can sit down and have a coffee, and have a chat to the guys there at the same time. Cheers, Pat

Hi Attard .....just read you query .......... A couple of courses worth a try ........Home Barista Institute on Victoria street near the Melb Market . Check the website at homebaristainstitute.com.au   ........covers the basics fairly well over 3 hours and then a more advanced latte art . Both are pretty good , but try to cover a lot of ground in 3 hours . A more thorough option is Chris Natoli at William Angliss . I started with Victoria Street as it covered the field quickly and gives you a good feel for those areas where you need better attention ......a good grounding before William Angliss . In between times I practised my thing off on the Giotto and Mazza Mini Hope that helps ... Regards, Coffeebean

Run by Justin Metcalf. Knows his stuff - knows lots about coffee - you couldn't get a better teacher.

Thanks everyone for the advice, plenty of great suggestions! I think going in to visit a few places sounds like a good starting point. Once again very happy to have found this site, although I have probably spent far too much time on here in such a short time! Cheers, James

James If you can organise some training with Justin, it would be well recommended. I am not sure what Veneziano are doing with regards to training, but if you can get a session with Dave then it would be worth the expense. If you get to Sydney let us know. John

Try Veneziano Coffee. Works for them. Let me know how it goes. I will be looking at sharpening some off my own skills and ironing out any kinks.
