After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Media, most over used word.

edited January 1970 in Off-topic
The media, both print and electronic have embraced the word DEADLY with open arms.
We see constant references to deadly animals, deadly hospital fires, deadly climate change, deadly spiders, deadly ponies, deadly waves, deadly accidents and deadly air strikes, the list is endless.
Remove the word from the English language and majority of journo's would be struck dumb, like most over used words it's completely lost it's impact. ::)

  • My least favorite overused phrase is "no parent can afford to miss!" This usually guarantees that the report is over-sensationalized rubbish pitched to the most gullible or ignorant!
  • Groundbreaking is overused But its the misinformation in a headline that errks me  KK
  • And of course the word often used used by politicians CLEARLY which translated means no one really has a bloody clue as to what's going on here, except possibly me, and I'm not really sure. :coffee2:

Interesting how we focus on different things, I suspect it's age related, being retired with no children living at home the phrase "no parent can afford to miss!" has not even showed up on my radar. :)
  • The 'media' can't be trusted these days. There's no such thing as impartial reporting or true investigative journalism except in (perhaps) the ABC and some very few independent publications. It's positive in some ways. Social media and sites like Reddit provide the real sources of news - but it's just untrustworthy enough that we have to (gasp) think for ourselves and approach any information with a skeptical and critical outlook.
  • Just like every man and his dog who might own or sell coffee beans commercially can call themselves "Master Roaster". There are a lot of them learning and some have even lost the art of learning - just pushing buttons.

It's never been any different Kelsey, Frank Sinatra had this to say about Aussie journalists during a visit in 1974, I suspect he got it right. "In 1974, during a concert performance in Australia, Sinatra attacked reporters as "bums and parasites" and female reporters as "buck-and-a-half hookers"' As a result the unions banned refuelling Sinatra's plane so that he couldn't leave. In retaliation, Sinatra threatened to cancel his remaining three concerts. A truce was negotiated by union leader (later Prime Minister) Bob Hawke." And of course back in the 40's and 50's we had the scandal sheets The Melbourne and Adelaide Truth, all tit's, bums and reports of a sexual nature. :stir
