After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Online Coffee Machine Comparison

Sooo! I now have an espresso machine, a standard coffee machine, and a stove espresso maker. Just found this deal online, and I never new such things existed... haha. Yes, I am a failure of coffee drinking, didn't really get into it until recently, where my friend brought some beans back with him from Africa. Incredible. So I started trying different coffees, haha. Soooo, here's the main question! Should I get a brasilia, tecnosystems or a sunbeam coffee pod machine?

  • Pods from cheapie sites???? OMG... AVOID!!!  Get fresh roasted beans from one of the sponsors or members here and enjoy coffee.  Buy the crud you've linked to and support those who sell sh!t... If you choose the latter you'll be in the minority in a forum focussed on quality coffee irrespective of extraction method.  I have recently purchased reusable pods from Di Bella for use in my friend's Nexpresso horror.  The machine runs far too hot and fast for my tastes but I persevered with some BH Blend home ground and packed in. The shot didn't look as good as the Nexpresso Ristetcho shot/pod but tasted so much better.  For him I am going to dark roast a traditional espresso blend (BIP is it???) with 10% robusta and try again.  Any of he machines you hav now CoffeeHeaven will be far superior to the trash you've linked to and apart from some smugness fun then landfill you'll get much better bang for your buck sourcing great brown beans. Cheers, BH
  • +1 here too. I would suggest perservere and learn to make great coffee manually. Pods just promotes laziness and it does not improve you as a coffee drinker. Once you have learnt that, then there's no turning back to Pods or instant. I have drank from both pods and properly made coffee from an espresso machine as well as manual brewing methods such as a Clever Coffee Dripper. I know what i prefer. Gary at G
  • thanks for the recommendations :) if you so strongly suggest, I think I'll stick to my coffee beans then. I'm quite impressed with your knowledge of coffee, it's cool what you can specialize in in this world today! What do you use to make your coffees?
  • I use a Italian made espresso machine called the Rancilio Silvia. The grinder is the Compak K3. These two are great bang for buck. I went shopping today for post christmas sale bargains and came across a demo using Nespresso pods. She made a cup and handed to me. I looked at it, took a deep breath and tasted it. Have to say it wasn't that much better than instant coffee. One sip is enough for me. i wondered how long those grounds were sitting in those pods for. I guess i'm spoilt, but that's the benefit of reading a lot of information, discussions and working out the best possible way to enjoy good coffee. Whereabouts are you? Gary at G

Sound advice Gary, the Silvia really is a great little machine, almost bullet proof, I had one for 9 years, never missed a beat and the new owner is delighted with it. Pods, less said the better. :)
  • I started with a Krups and a Nemox Lux grinder. Good coffee was possible due to my popper roaster and a supply of green beans from Alan Frew.  It didn't take long before the effort to get great coffee from the Krups became tiresome so off I went to a Myer and a Nespresso demo.  It all looked great save the landfill from pods, but looks we deceiving and the taste was not worth the expense or the efforts of loading a pod!  Next purchase was a Silvia from Alan again and ten years later I sold it for two thirds of it's initial price.  The poppers have given way to the Behmor and the KKTO and my green supply comes form a bit closer to home: www.beangreen.com.au but what a great journey and the mate who went the pod option all those years ago loves coffee... Just not his own so much! Get into the forum, get into the journey and get into quality!  +1 Gary +1 DB
  • Comparison? Pods can't possibly compare to fresh beans and known method of extraction... Stick with what you have and leave pods for the lazy people without taste buds

Interesting history Brett, almost parallels my experience. Stated with a Krups, no grinder, bought ground coffee from Alan Frew, the krups lasted about 12 about 12 months, I then graduated to a Silvia/Rocky combination that endured for just over 9 years. I sold Silvia for $50 less than I paid for her new and I got almost exactly what I paid for Rocky, not bad eh? the guy that bought them from me over 18 months ago is still using them daily. I also now buy from Beangreen, certainly not closer to home but great people to deal with who have a good product. Have a good new year Brett and stay safe. ;)
  • That Frew character apparently has a lot to answer for...  after too much reading alt.coffee I ended up with a Silvia, Lux and brown beans from him to replace a series of 'appliances'.  Kept me happy for nearly 8 years until upgraditis struck a few years ago, although it sounds like I was a bit generous when I sold it.

You're very welcome Coffeeheaven, Do stick to it, and it will reward you. Cafes do not use pods, so the same techniques and manual machine used, the closer you are or, will have attained cafe quality. Any questions or any advice needed, we'll be happy to help a fellow Crema member like yourself :) Gary at G

Hi DB, I still have a Rocky on my bench but it is quite recent: 2009.  These parallels may go some way to explaining why I agree with your posts so frequently and publicly.  Also that we are both always right ;)  you have a great New Year also!

That alt.coffee was truly addictive, vindictive and even toxic by the end.  A wonderful resource in it's day.  Thank heavens for Crema eh!  I still have my Lux Paranomia and it was sent to Warick on espresso duty with a friend for Christmas with a HX.... Apparently it did brilliantly... well done Mr Frew eh!
