After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Unscrupulous rep

A story about a bad coffee rep that might be interesting to some cafe owners, I suppose...

I visit my first cafe from time to time, and occasionally give them a quick pointer on their coffee prep/service. A little while ago, they changed coffees - and of course, accompanying sales reps.

I never liked the new rep from the start, when the boss told me about how he had seemed to be reciting his answers and 'training' material from a textbook. What struck me immediately was that he always made sure that the grinder was at a certain setting - the single 'right' setting on the grinder.

Anyway, that was a minor gripe. Not my cafe, and my boss hasn't employed the greatest baristas ever, so they weren't likely to notice or care. Here's what happened just some weeks ago, though:

My former boss had her day off, and the rep came in (apparently he only came in when she was out). He had with him a new guy, presumably a new rep who was tagging along on his service checks. Anyway, main rep goes to the decaf grinder to 'fix' it (apparently he removed the hopper and placed it back on), and then starts training the new guy on the machine there.

The Rep was training up someone completely unrelated to the cafe on this cafe's machine. This accounted over half of that day's bean usage.

One of the employees informed the rep(s) that there was a page of coffee orders to be filled - the 'trainer' replied that they had to wait while he trained up his underling (?!).

Later that day he called up the boss and said he noticed she wasn't going through much decaf, and that maybe she should order pre-ground decaf from him since it would remain 'fresher' that way. ..
.. after a bit of ponted questioning from her, he finally conceded that the company was low on decaf grinders, and just wanted to take hers back. She refused, of course, pointing out the part of the contract that had assured her a secondary decaf grinder.

I was pretty shocked by this. She says she has a new rep, but I have to wonder whether or not he is still doing this, albeit in a different area/company. She is considering writing a letter to the coffee company - what do you think?

  • HI Billy - sounds appalling - especially the bit about training someone else on your previous cafe's machinery! If this really is the case, I'd not only send a letter; I'd be thinking about checking the conditions of my contract and changing suppliers! -A
